Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This cover shows a girl with ringlets. She is placing a bundle of clothes into a box. Another girl stands and watches her.

Answer: Lavender Laughs in the Chalet School

The girl with the clothes is Lavender Leigh - the ringlets are a big clue. She brought too many dresses to school and had to put some of them away. Later she gives some to Lilamani, a poorer girl at the school.
2. A woman is walking into a garden. She wears a green dress. She is carrying a large basket. Beside her walk three little girls.

Answer: Jo to the Rescue

The women is Jo Maynard. We know this by her hair, the fact that she wears green - a favourite colour for Jo (actually, it is a 'soft jade' - green would be too ordinary for Jo!) and of course the three little girls - her triplets. They are going into the garden of their neighbour (whilst on holiday) Phoebe.
3. There are five girls. Two girls wear hats and stand to one side, watching. Two girls are on the ground, pulling the fifth, much younger, girl out from under a rock.

Answer: The Chalet School Wins the Trick

The little girl is Winn - she ran off, chasing a butterfly, and then fell asleep under an overhanging rock. The others are trying to pull her free before she wakes up. (If she wakes up under the rock, she might try and sit up and bump her head!)
4. A man points a pistol at a young girl. Outside a window stands another girl and a large dog.

Answer: Redheads at the Chalet School

I could have told you both girls are red-heads, but that would have made the question too easy! The girls are Flavia (also called Copper) and Len Maynard. There are actually quite a few redheads at the Chalet School; when kidnappers come to grab Copper, they grab the wrong girl.
5. There are a number of girls inside a hut. Outside, in the snow, there is an unconscious girl being pulled into the hut by another girl. On the ground we see a walking stick.

Answer: Trials for the Chalet School

The big clue here is the walking stick...this suggests that the unconscious girl is Naomi. The girls had to shelter overnight in the hut until they were rescued. This sort of thing happens a lot in the books! However, in this case, there is no handsome, unmarried doctor in the rescue party.
6. A young girl sits at a piano. Through the window behind her, we see mountains.

Answer: A Genius at the Chalet School

The girl is, of course, Nina Rutherford. There have been other good musicians at the Chalet School - Margia Stevens (pianist), Jacynth Hardy (cellist), Joey Bettany (Golden Voice), Verity Carey (singer) but Nina was something very special. She composed a lullaby for one of Joey's (many) children - 'Welcome to Cecily' whilst still at school.
7. A girl wearing a raincoat and a beret is carrying two suitcases. She is glancing behind her, where a crowd of people are boarding a ship

Answer: Carola Storms the Chalet School

This is an early scene in the book, where Carola slips away from her aunt and runs away to join the Chalet School. This is one of my favourite books - it's not the fact that it is a great story (which it is) or that Carola is a great character (which she is) it's the revelation that Jack Maynard's nickname was 'Jigger'!
8. This jacket shows girls, not in their school uniform, but wearing Girl Guide uniforms. 3 girls are pulling on a length of rope...on the other end of which is a fourth girl, rather dishevelled, being pulled out of some sort of ditch.

Answer: The Chalet Girls in Camp

The girl being pulled out of the ditch is Joey. This is a terrific story - especially for anyone who has been on a guide camp. I love the episode where they go fishing and find a 'body' !
9. A man in uniform is talking to two young women. His uniform is black, including boots and a cap. There is some sort of insignia on his shoulder.

Answer: The Chalet School in Exile

One of my all time favourite Chalet School books. Did you know that the Chalet girls and Mistresses who escape over the mountains took a similar route to that taken by the von Trapps in "The Sound of Music" (although not in real life) - and yet Brent-Dyer wrote her Chalet School books in the 1920s.
10. And finally...possibly my favourite dust-jacket. The dust-jacket picture covers the front and back of the jacket. It depicts a large room, full of people. Some are standing and chatting, some are sitting, drinking coffee, smoking (!) and looking at photos; a large dog is in the room too.

Answer: The Chalet School Reunion

This special dust-jacket came with a key to identify all the people in the picture. It was the 50th book in the series.
