Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Noughts
Answer: Crosses
"Noughts and Crosses" is also known as "Tic-Tac-Toe". It can be played with a paper and pencil. A grid of nine squares is drawn. Players then take turns to draw a circle or cross with the aim of being the first to complete a row of three of a kind.
2. Snakes
Answer: Ladders
"Snakes and Ladders" is a board game that is believed to have originated in India. It follows a simple format. Players roll a dice by turn. Depending on the number that shows up, the player then moves his counter by that many paces. If it ends up on a ladder, the player gets to jump up a few rows and if it lands on a snake, then the player has to come back down a few rows.
The game is also sold under the name "Chutes and Ladders" which replaces the snakes with chutes but all else remains the same.
3. Oranges
Answer: Lemons
"Oranges and Lemons" is a traditional rhyme which originated in England. It is the basis for a singing game which starts off with two players forming an arch with their hands and the others forming a line to pass under it. The rhyme ends with the line "Here comes a chopper to chop off your head." (note there are other variations as well).
At the last line, the ones forming the arch drop their hands and the players caught within it must now form an arch as well.
4. Sharks
Answer: Minnows
"Sharks and Minnows" is a tag type of game. This name is popular in the US while a similar game goes by the name "Bulldog" in the UK. In the game, a couple of players are selected to be the sharks. The sharks stand in the middle of the playing area while the remaining players, the minnows, stand at one end.
The minnows have to run to the other end of the area without getting caught by the sharks. If they are caught, they turn into a shark too.
5. Odds
Answer: Evens
"Odds and Evens" is a simple game typically used to help players pick sides before beginning any game similar to a coin toss of "Heads or Tails". The game is played by two players at a time. Each chooses either odd or even. At the count of three, each player will show any number of fingers of their choice (usually of one hand only). If the sum of the fingers shown by both players is even, the one who has picked even is the winner.
6. Cat
Answer: Mouse
"Cat and Mouse" is children's playground game. Two players are selected to be the cat and mouse respectively. The rest of the players hold hands to form a circle. The mouse is inside the circle and the cat is outside. The cat must catch the mouse but it cannot come into the circle.
The mouse cannot stay inside the circle for more than ten seconds at a time. If the cat manages to catch the mouse, the mouse then has to take on the role of the cat and a new player is selected to be the mouse.
7. Truth
Answer: Dare
"Truth or Dare" is a popular campsite game played by older children. A player has to pick either truth or dare. If dare is picked, they are assigned a task to carry out. If truth is picked, they are asked to truthfully answer a question or reveal some information. If the player cannot complete the truth or dare (whichever was picked), they are either eliminated from the game or are given a penalty to complete.
