Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First off, let's see who has done a cover of Hank Williams' initial 1951 blues ballad. Which of these great entertainers (and Nobel Prize winner) did NOT release a cover of "Cold, Cold Heart"?

Answer: Bob Dylan, in 1988

Hiram "Hank" Williams (1923-53) released this classic song on January 2nd, 1951, and before the year was up, it had been covered by six others: Tony Bennett (the first to do so in July); Dinah Shore and Louis Armstrong (both in October); and both Petula Clark and the Fontaine Sisters in November.

And it has been covered by many, many more times since, including Aretha Franklin and Norah Jones... but NOT by Bob Dylan.

According to the story by Audrey Williams (Hank's wife), "I was in the hospital for some minor ailment. We had an argument. He and the children had come to visit me and brought me the first fur coat I ever owned. During the entire visit I spoke to the children, but I didn't speak to Hank. On his way home he told our housekeeper, Audrey Ragland, 'She's got the coldest heart I've seen.' That same night he wrote this song. Among the 100 songs Hank Williams wrote, this song was his favorite."
2. "Cold Cold Heart" is the title of a short story by the best-selling American crime writer whom you might know better for her "Will Trent" or "Grant County" series. Who is she?

Answer: Karin Slaughter

Yes, Slaughter is actually her name, and not a nom-de-plume. Karin published her first novel "Blindsighted" in 2001, making it to the short list for the "Best Thriller Debut" award (from the Crime Writers' Association's Dagger Awards) for that year. "Blindsighted" was the first novel within the "Grant County" series.

"Cold Cold Heart" was published in 2006 and is a story of revenge for a scorned wife. After being betrayed and left by her husband, then watching his fortunes increase while hers decline, eventually the tables turn and fate brings them back together and Pam has her chance at vengeance...
3. Available as a campaign expansion for the 2013 video game "Batman: Arkham Origins", "Cold, Cold Heart" focuses on the origins of which Batman villain?

Answer: Mr. Freeze

The storyline behind "Cold, Cold Heart" is drawn from the "Batman: The Animated Series" episode entitled "Heart of Ice", which was Mr. Freeze's first appearance on the show and outlined his origin story.

The game was originally released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360.
4. "Cold Heart" was a 2001 erotic thriller starring Nastassja Kinski as the unhappy wife of a psychiatrist who gets romantically involved with one of his patients. Better known for playing the wise-cracking Sawyer on the TV series "LOST", who played the handsome (but psychotic) lover?

Answer: Josh Holloway

While Josh Holloway played the young psychopath in "Cold Heart", he doesn't end up being the true villain in this twisted tale of love and betrayal. It had a very short theater run and had mixed reviews.
5. 'Professor Coldheart' is a villain in which children's toy-based television franchise?

Answer: Care Bears

"Care Bears" originally came out as a plush toy release in 1982, and along with the marketing campaign, a television special was produced, entitled "The Care Bears in the Land Without Feelings" (1983). This was followed up by another special in 1984 called "The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine". Professor Coldheart was the villain in both of these specials; a misanthropic and winter-centric mad scientist who rules 'The Land Without Feelings'.
6. British multi-instrumentalists Robert Manning, Chris Daniel and Gareth Jones came together in 2014 to create a post-rock/ambient musical group called "Cold, Cold Heart". Their name was chosen as a direct tribute to the 1951 Hank Williams song of the same name.

Answer: False

The British group "Cold, Cold Heart" actually write music that is meant to reflect the feelings associated with the troubles of the heart. Their self-described debut album is described as the band's "shared soundtrack to life; to the fear and beauty in death; to infatuation and devotion; to the band's personal battles with illness."

Unsurprisingly, the short-lived (1995-1998) Washington D.C.-based punk rock band "Cold Cold Hearts" also had no link to Hank Williams.

In contrast, the alternative country group "Cold Cold Heart" from Massachusetts (formed in 1996) *did* choose their name as a tribute to Hank Williams.
7. "Coldheart" is the title of a novel written in the "Doctor Who" universe. Which Doctor is featured in this story, alongside companions 'Fitz' and 'Compassion'?

Answer: The Eighth Doctor

The Eight Doctor (played by Paul McGann in the 1996 made-for-television movie) is featured in this 2000 novel as he and his companions undertake a dangerous mission on the planet Eskon. Where the planet has a burning hot surface, there is a civilization hidden beneath the surface alongside vast frozen lakes (hence, the title "Coldheart").

The Doctor and his companions must prevent a disaster that could mean the end of the Eskon civilization.
8. The minor Marvel villain 'Coldheart' is a former government agent who blames superheroes for the death of her son and hunts them down using cold-generating swords that can freeze a person in place. Which web-slinging hero was her target in her first appearance?

Answer: Spider-Man

Kateri Deseronto worked for a federal agency (unnamed) and had many skills, including martial arts, before the trauma of dealing with her son's loss forced her to retire. Since his death came as a result of a super-powered conflict, Kateri took it upon herself to take vengeance on all superhumans.

With equipment (armor and swords) stolen from her government employers, Kateri took the name 'Coldheart' and proceeded to hunt superhumans, beginning with Spider-Man (in "Spider-Man" #49, Aug. 1994).
9. Author Tami Hoag published a stand-alone novel entitled "Cold Cold Heart" in 2015. It joined her growing list of New York Times Best-Sellers List novels, written in what genre?

Answer: Thriller

While Tami Hoag may have begun her career as a serial romance novelist, she made the jump to psychological thrillers with great success. Her first novel to reach number one on the NY Times Best-Sellers list was 1995's "Night Sins", which was later made into a 1997 television mini-series of the same name.

"Cold Cold Heart" (2015) follows a woman who survived a serial killer as she works through her PTSD and revisits a trauma from her past (an unsolved crime) in her home town.
10. Coming back full circle to "Cold, Cold Heart" as a song title, which Scottish group wrote a song with that title (that was NOT a cover of Hank Williams) in 1993?

Answer: Wet Wet Wet

Wet Wet Wet was formed four high school students in Clydebank, Scotland in 1982, originally going by the name 'Vortex Motion'. They changed their name soon after, taking it from the lyrics of a song by 'Scritti Politti'. In an interview, the band recalls that the popularity of such band names as 'Duran Duran' and 'Talk Talk' at the time led them to choose the new name, and 'Wet Wet Wet' just fit well with Glasgow.

"Cold, Cold Heart" was written as a new track for their 1993 "End of Part One: Their Greatest Hits" album, and also released as a single in late December. It reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart.
