Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hermione Granger
Answer: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Hermione Granger held two different jobs during "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". The story was a time travel tale, so several of the characters had multiple different roles.
In the main timeline she served as the Minister of Magic, and as Harry Potter's boss.
When Harry's son Albus and Draco Malfoy's son Scorpius travelled back in time to the first task in the Triwizard Tournament they changed the future. Even though they only made small changes, it stopped Ron and Hermione from marrying.
That change led to Ron marrying one of the Parvati sisters and Hermione to staying single. With Hermione single, she never rose to prominence and instead took a job as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.
By the end of the tale, everything was corrected and Hermione had returned to her role as Minister of Magic.
2. Severus Snape
Answer: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Severus Snape had been the potions master at Hogwarts for more than 20 years (including Harry Potter's first five) when he was finally elevated to the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher during "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince".
Ironically it was that change that allowed Harry to join the advanced potions courses as Prof. Horace Slughorn (Snape's replacement in the potions courses) allowed a slightly less strict grading scale to qualify.
Snape taught the Dark Arts and their defense with a passion - much more lovingly than any of the previous teachers fans of the series had seen.
Snape was a reformed Death Eater, who was still undercover with them. The dark forces thought he was spying on The Order of the Phoenix for them, and the Order thought he was spying on the Death Eaters for them.
Readers were left unaware of his true nature until very near the end of the series' final book.
During Harry's seventh year (though he didn't actually go back to school) Snape served as the Headmaster of the school. Harry and his wife Ginny named their son Albus Severus Potter to honor Snape and Dumbledore.
3. Quirinus Quirrell
Answer: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Quirrell was the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher when Harry and his friends first arrived at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
It was revealed near the end of the first book that he was possessed and had been being controlled by Lord Voldemort for most of the school year.
When Harry and Hagrid first met Quirrell (in the book, it was changed in the movie version), he was not yet possessed by Voldemort.
Eventually after Quirrell failed a few tasks, Voldemort took control of his body, and in doing so had his own face appear on the back of Quirrell's head. This is why after the opening few chapters the teacher started wearing a turban and began distancing himself from Harry.
Quirrell died during the first book after Voldemort left his body badly injured.
4. Gilderoy Lockhart
Answer: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Lockhart was the second teacher hired to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts during Harry's tenure at the school. He replaced Quirinus Quirrell, who had died the previous year.
Lockhart was a very famous wizard, who had written several books on his travels and dealings with various creatures. All of the books were lies and fake, though, as the students found out. He had very little knowledge on defending himself or how to stop various magical creatures.
His 14 books were all the stories of other wizards. He would find them, convince them to tell him their story and then curse them, wiping away their own memories.
He ended up in St. Mungo's Hospital after his year at Hogwarts.
5. Amycus Carrow
Answer: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
During Amycus Carrow's time the position was renamed Dark Arts, instead of Defense Against the Dark Arts.
He taught at the school during what would have been Harry's seventh year. He served as both the Dark Arts teacher and the Deputy Head Master during his year there.
He was a Death Eater, and only got the position at the school after the Ministry of Magic fell to Lord Voldemort and assumed control of the wizarding world.
He and his sister, Alecto Carrow, often spent time torturing and giving out severe punishments to students who didn't specifically join up with Voldemort's ranks.
6. Dolores Umbridge
Answer: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Umbridge was brought in by the Ministry of Magic to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts during Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She also served as Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, and later in the school year was appointed as both High Inquisitor and later Headmaster when Dumbledore was temporarily removed from the post.
She refused to teach practical defense, and instead taught only from the Ministry-approved books and curriculum.
After she attacked Hagrid, she eventually was kidnapped by a group of centaurs and carried off into the woods. After his return to the school, Dumbledore rescued her from the centaurs. She left the school on her own, but retained a job at the ministry.
7. Harry Potter
Answer: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry was never officially a teacher at the school, but he did teach a large group of students practical defensive spells when the officially hired Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher refused.
Harry, using the room of requirement, started a group that would become known as "Dumbledore's Army". Harry, along with his friends Ron and Hermione, founded the group. Harry was the leader, with Ron and Hermione serving simultaneously as assistants and students.
Harry knew more advanced defensive spells than any other student. With the return of Voldemort being kept under wraps by the Ministry of Magic, Dumbledore's Army took up the slack in educating the students.
There were 24 students who had been named characters in the books, and dozens more who were only mentioned as members of the "D.A." during the book.
As an adult Harry went on to become an Auror, and never officially took a teaching position at the school.
8. Barty Crouch Jr.
Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Barty Crouch Jr., the son of the the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement during "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", became the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher without anyone knowing.
He was a known Death Eater, but his father rescued him from Azkaban Prison. He put his son under the Imperius curse and kept him nearby (but hidden under an invisibility cloak.)
Eventually Voldemort found out where Crouch Jr. was, and put Crouch Sr. under the Imperius curse, while freeing Crouch Jr. Barty Crouch Jr. then kidnapped Alastor Moody, who had been hired to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. He use a Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Moody for most of the school year.
9. Remus Lupin
Answer: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Remus Lupin had been one of James Potter's closest friends when they attended school together.
During Harry's third year at Hogwarts Castle Lupin was hired to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. The only catch was that Lupin was a werewolf. In the "Harry Potter" world, werewolves typically distanced themselves from the rest of the wizarding world.
Due to his "condition", a few times during the year he was forced to miss lessons. When that happened, Severus Snape filled in. Snape also was the one who brewed the Wolfsbane Potion each month during Lupin's time at the school.
Snape "accidentally" revealed that Lupin was a werewolf, which led to him leaving the position at the school.
10. Alastor Moody
Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, was a very prominent, but retired, Auror. He was hired to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and agreed to do it as a favor to Dumbledore. Sometime after he was hired, but before he arrived at the school, he was kidnapped by Barty Crouch Jr. and kept locked up for most of the school year.
By the time Moody was discovered in the chest in his own office and Crouch Jr. was captured the term had ended. While he never taught a lesson all year, he was technically the teacher of record.
After his time at the school Moody joined the Order of the Phoenix and fought against Voldemort until he died protecting Harry in the final book in the series.
