It's school holidays, and I'm home looking after the kids and their injured Dad (who would've figured he'd hurt himself playing sport at his age?) We have lots of chores to get done so we can spend the day out tomorrow and leave dad at home by himself.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first chore that needs doing has already been started. I've already washed a load of clothes and taken them out of the washing machine. What do you think I would like the kids to do with them next?

Answer: Hang the clothes on the washing line

The laundry has already been washed and I've put it in the basket. The kids just have to take it outside and hang it on the washing line. There are a couple of steps for them to stand on and it will keep them out of the house for a while so their dad can have a few more minutes of sleep.
2. The kids are back inside now and I've just checked their rooms. It looks like each has had a bomb go off in there! Can you guess what I'm going to ask each child to do next?

Answer: Clean their bedrooms

Neither child is happy to have to clean their room. I figure if I can't see the floor, I also can't see how many toys they need for birthday and Christmas presents - that'll get them moving quick-smart!
3. I've cut up some fruit for the kids for a morning snack. I have some apple cores, banana peels, and melon skin that needs to be removed from the house. Of the following options, which is NOT what I'd probably ask my kids to do with the food scraps?

Answer: Put the scraps in the fish tank

The compost heap or worm farm are probably the best place for the food scraps. Although if I didn't have either, I'd ask them to put the scraps in the bin. The fish tank would be an option if there was an animal in there that actually ate food scraps but fish aren't really known for eating fruit!
4. Okay, we've had a pretty quiet morning so far and it's time to let the kids make some noise. Which of the following chores would be considered the noisiest?

Answer: Vacuuming the floor

Vacuuming the floor is definitely a noisy chore - that's why I've left it until now. Well that and the fact that we can now get into the kids' rooms and see some carpet to actually vacuum! Feeding the dog might be considered pretty noisy but the dog is generally quiet as soon as the food is in his bowl. The vacuum cleaner will be going and creating noise for at least the next half an hour, maybe I'll join my husband outside for a while...
5. The noise has died down inside so I'll go and check what the kids are up to now. I heard the postie (postman) ride past a few minutes ago, so what simple chore can I ask my daughter to do next?

Answer: Check the letterbox for mail

The postie, or postman, just rode past and might have left some mail for us. My daughter is only young but this is one of 'her' chores and she can do it without the help of her older brother. She loves checking the letterbox for mail. One day she'll be old enough to be getting mail herself; she'll be so excited when she finally does!
6. While it's a beautiful day everyone can get out in the garden for a while. The garden is looking a bit tatty but their dad can get down on the ground and help the kids with this chore. What will I ask them to do next?

Answer: Pull weeds from the garden beds

Pulling weeds is definitely good for both the kids and the garden. The kids will love spending some time with their dad and pulling weeds is VERY therapeutic. Especially for me - I'll be inside away from them all - making their lunches!
7. With lunch time over my daughter can go for a nap with her dad (they both look like they need it) and I'll help my son with this next chore. We'll take the laundry off the washing line then what do you think we'll do with it next?

Answer: Fold and sort the laundry

The washing will need to be folded then put into piles for each person to put away in their own bedrooms. And, as I keep reminding my son, that means putting in either drawers or a cupboard - NOT on the floor!
8. We are nearly done with the chores now and it's getting quite late into the afternoon. My daughter and her dad are still asleep so my son and I will start preparing food for our next meal that we might even cook together. Which of the following is a common name for the meal at the end of the day?

Answer: Dinner

Dinner is usually the meal at the end of the day. Breakfast is for when you first wake up in the morning and lunch is in the middle of the day. Seeing as though we've already had breakfast, lunch and a snack, it's time to start preparing some vegetables for dinner. I think we'll start with something simple - potatoes and carrots and work from there...
9. So my little snoozers have been up, eaten their evening meal and both gone back to bed and there are two chores to go. My son's next chore involves the dog, a tin of food and a can opener. What have I asked my son to do for his last chore?

Answer: Feed the dog

I've asked my son to feed the dog. Once he's done that, he can have his shower and read his book for a while before he goes to sleep then I can relax for a while - but not until I've done the last chore.
10. The last chore of the day - thank goodness it's nearly over! There are a pile of dirty dishes here on the bench so what do you think I have to do with them now?

Answer: Wash the dishes

I'll wash the dishes tonight - not that I have much choice, the dishwasher is broken. I should be finished soon though then I can sit down for a while and plan a big day tomorrow for the kids (and a quiet one for their dad). I hope we're not too tired to enjoy a full day at the water park...
