1. What is this item, which is used to see when it is dark?

Answer: Lamp

You might know Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, but did you know that the lamp in the picture, which is a floor lamp called a torchère, was invented by the French in the 17th century? Of course, back then, they used candelabras with candles to light them, not electricity.
2. What do people use to control the TV?

Answer: Remote

The remote control was invented by Nikola Tesla in the late 1890s, but the TV wasn't invented until 1927. The first remote was used for boats.
3. What can you use when your nose is runny?

Answer: Tissue

Many people call all tissues Kleenex, but Kleenex is a specific brand of tissues. Facial tissues originated in Japan in the 17th century. But the ones we used today were invented in 1924 by Kimberly-Clark.
4. When I make pasta, what do I use to boil the water?

Answer: Stove

The most common stoves today are the natural gas stoves (in the picture) and the electric stoves. However stoves have been around since around 221 BC. The earliest known were invented by the Chinese Qin Dynasty and were clay stoves.
5. What can I use to cool down when I am hot?

Answer: Air Conditioner

Ancient Egypt had a type of air conditioning called passive air conditioning. Passive air conditioning was used until the 20th century when people started to use powered AC.
6. Where can I put my clothes when they are wet?

Answer: Dryer

In 1937, Henry W. Altofer invented the electric dryer. The following year J. Ross Moore created an automatic one.
7. What do I turn on when I wash my hands to get water?

Answer: Faucet

While Isaiah Rogers invented indoor plumbing in 1826, it wasn't used in homes until 1840. A hundred years later, in 1940, almost half of all homes in the United States had no indoor plumbing.
8. If you want to heat something quickly, what could you use?

Answer: Microwave

The microwave was invented in 1945 by Percy Spencer. The first thing he cooked with it was popcorn.
9. What do you need to pick the ice cream up when you have a nice yummy bowl?

Answer: Spoon

Spoons have been around since at least 1000 BC, but before that, people used seashells like they were spoons to eat some foods.
10. All these questions make me thirsty - what can I use to take a drink?

Answer: Glass

Glass is made from a type of sand called quartz sand. It has to be heated to over 3000 degrees Fahrenheit to be melted so it can become glass.
