Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Discovered in 1741

Answer: Alaska

Peter the Great, a Russian Tsar (Emperor), wanted to find a better way to get to the Americas than sailing through the Atlantic, so he commanded Danish navigator Vitus Bering to sail West until he came to some European civilization. Unfortunately, after much sailing, they found no trace of European civilization. Finally, due to fierce winter storms and low supplies, they decided to turn back and return to Russia.

They ended up in what is now Alaska. Eventually, the crew, minus 31 people, returned to Russia in 1742.
2. First colony established on Kodiak Island

Answer: Alaska

The first colony in Alaska was on one of the smaller islands south of it. Grigory Shelikhov, a Russian fur trader, established it and named the colony Three Saints Bay. From there, the colonists explored the mainland.
3. Tea Party of 1773

Answer: Not Alaska

The Boston Tea Party took place in protest against the Tea Act, a tax placed by the British upon tea. Led by Samuel Adams, the Sons of Liberty boarded three ships in the Boston harbor and dumped all the chests of tea into the sea. The fish must have wondered what happened to their salty seawater, giving it an odd flavor.
4. American Civil War under Abraham Lincoln

Answer: Not Alaska

President Lincoln came before President Johnson. Raging from 1861 to 1865, the American Civil War took about 620,000 lives.
