Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This book starts out with a letter - to whom it may concern - and a library card. What is the date that this library card is supposedly valid until?

Answer: 1904

This library card belongs to a Dr. Ernest Drake, who lives in good old London, England. The book was written as though it is the late 1800's, when it really came out in 2003. However, it is based on a book that was written in 1895 that was recently found in a book store in London.
2. Which of these are not one of the five F's of Dragonology?

Answer: Flame retardant clothing

Although flame proof clothing is a very good idea for Dragonologists to have, it is not one of the five F's (fieldwork, foresight, forwardness, frankness, and yes, fatalities). Flame proof clothing falls under foresight - if you're working with dragons, fires are a given.
3. Which of the following is not classified as a mountain dragon by Dr. Drake?

Answer: Draco troglodytes

Draco occ. magnus (European dragon), Draco orientalis (Asian lung), and Draco montana (Tibetan dragon) are specially designed to survive in mountain regions all across the globe, but Draco troglodytes (Knucker) have wings that don't allow them to fly, so they tend to stay in the forested areas around western Europe.
4. Which of these is not a prominent feature of the European dragon?

Answer: long whiskery feelers

Long whiskery feelers are found on the Chinese lung, whereas the other three examples are found on the European dragon. Now you know why the knights always had to wear so much armour!
5. How many toes does the Chinese or Imperial lung have?

Answer: 5

The Chinese lung has the most toes out of the Asian lungs, with the Japanese having 4 and the Indonesian having the least, with 3.
6. How long is the gestation period of dragons?

Answer: 36 months

This book gives a description of how to hatch and raise dragons, from what to feed them to how to tell they are maturing. It also gives you a warning that it is not a good idea to release dragons into the New York sewage system, but into the wild, as only bad things can come of dragons in sewers.
7. How many letters are in the Dragon script alphabet?

Answer: 22

The dragons only have one letter for c-k, i-j, and u-v. They also have cut q from their script.
8. According to the laws of flight, dragons can't fly.

Answer: True

This is true; according to the author of this book, dragons should not be able to fly because of their sheer size (just like bumblebees). They are able to fly, however, because of their light weight and hollow bones, and their ability to rapidly bend and rotating their wings in their sockets.
9. What is the most important thing to remember when approaching Eastern dragons?

Answer: respect

Eastern dragons are not as "dangerous" as Western dragons in that they will even eat out of your hand if you follow the correct protocol and maintain a high level of respect for them during the entire encounter.
10. In Appendix II, there is a spell for invisibility. How long does it take to make a person completely invisible?

Answer: 15 seconds

This appendix is full of neat spells including the invisibility spell, which needs four freshwater pearls, dragon horn, jade, koi and the chanting of a Chinese phrase - but it will make you invisible for four hours. This book has lots of interesting facts on dragons - where else are you going to learn how many toes a dragon has? I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
