Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "One potato, two potato, three potato, four: Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more". This is a playground chant to accompany what sort of game?

Answer: Skipping

A 'counting out' game for skipping. The ending is often to shouts of "O-U-T, OUT". The origin is unknown. Potatoes, of course, are a staple food item in many countries, so perhaps it was due to the popularity of this food that it found its place in a children's rhyme.
2. A brother and sister were lost in the forest and found a wicked witch's house made from what delicious food?

Answer: Gingerbread

A tale from the Brothers Grimm. The children, Hansel and Gretel, were in the forest, lost because their trail of breadcrumbs had been eaten by animals and birds. They found a house made of gingerbread and a wicked witch who wanted to eat them, but she was tricked and the children escaped.
3. At Christmas time, a little boy was sitting in the corner and stuck his thumb in a pie. What sort of fruit did he pull out?

Answer: Plum

This rhyme about 'Little Jack Horner' dates back to around 1725 and is said to refer to Jack Horner, a Steward to the Bishop of Glastonbury who stole one of a set of twelve deeds of land, in fact, the best - the 'plum'.
4. What kind of tree did the King of Spain's daughter make a special visit to see because it bore a golden pear and a silver nutmeg?

Answer: Nut

'I Had a Little Nut Tree' was probably a rhyme about the Spanish Royal Family's visit to Henry VII. The King of Spain's daughter, Katherine of Aragon, accompanied the King on his visit and later married Henry VIII.
5. A little boy had to sing for his supper. What food was he waiting to be given?

Answer: Brown Bread and Butter

'Little Tommy Tucker' was a general term for any orphan who was homeless and had to beg or 'sing' for his (or her) supper.
6. Goldilocks tasted all the food the three bears had left out on the table. What were they having for breakfast?

Answer: Porridge

The Goldilocks and the Three Bears story has been around for over two centuries. There are many origins and variations of this tale. Even her hair was not always 'gold', with one older version referring to 'Silver Locks'.
7. What was it that frightened the little girl who was sitting down eating something that looked like cottage cheese?

Answer: Spider

Little Miss Muffet (who sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey) is reputed to be Patience Muffet whose stepfather, Dr. Muffet, an entomologist, created a book catalogue of insects in the late 16th century. Another belief is that it may refer to Mary Queen of Scots and John Knox who wanted to see her removed from the throne (tuffet). These rhymes are often not what they seem!
8. A baker was making a cake as fast as he could. He patted it and pricked out the letter 'B' on top. Who was this cake for?

Answer: Baby

'Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake Baker's Man' can be traced back to about 1700. Although the origin is unknown, the clapping game is still popular today and cakes are still decorated in this way.
9. What was the name of the hungry boy who was going to a fair and wanted a pie but did not have any money?

Answer: Simon

Simple Simon would have been trying to persuade one of the many food sellers (a pieman) at the fair to give him one of his pies. He did a lot of silly things - like trying to fish for a whale, collect water in a sieve and looking for a plum on a thistle.
10. Polly put the kettle on to make some tea. Who took it off again when everyone had gone home?

Answer: Sukey

Polly and Sukey were said to be the two daughters of the author of this rhyme, who also had three young sons. The children fought all the time and sometimes the girls wanted to play without the boys. So Polly would put the toy kettle on the toy stove and the bored boys go away. As soon as they had gone, Sukey would take the kettle off and they would happily play their own games.
