Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first "Z" word that I thought of was a striped, horse-like animal with a road crossing named after it. Can you tell me the name of the animal please?

Answer: Zebra

The zebra is the striped animal. As babies they are brown and white but they become the usual black and white as they get older.

The zorro or Darwin's zorro is a black fox. Zorro is the Spanish for fox. The zebu is also known as the Brahman, is a cow from South Asia. Taz is a cartoon character named after the Tasmanian devil.

The most famous zebra crossing in the world is in Abbey Road in London. That is where The Beatles recorded much of their music. The photograph of the four men for their "Abbey Road" album was taken on the zebra crossing on that road. It is often visited by tourists who want their pictures taken on the crossing and if I still lived in London, I would plan my route to miss Abbey Road during the daytime for that reason.
2. I am going to add a "Z" vegetable to the list. Which of these is known as a courgette in some parts of the world?

Answer: Zucchini

The zucchini or courgette is the fruit of the summer squash plant, but is called a vegetable when eaten. If left to grow they can be as long as a meter (3' 3"), but are usually harvested when a lot smaller as they taste best when younger.

The three wrong answers are also vegetables. Azuki and garbanzo are both beans and scorzonera is a root vegetable, also known as black salsify.
3. Which of the following "Z" words is a very important metal to humans?

Answer: Zinc

Zinc is a silver coloured metal, but it is also very important to humans as it a trace element that helps us to grow and be healthy. You do not need to eat chunks of metal though, as it is present in the food that we eat. It is useful in other ways too, such as in a cream to stop nappy/diaper rash, fight infection and make our hair and nails stronger.
4. For my "Z" list, I just thought of a musical instrument made up of rows of bars that you hit with hammers. It sounds like it starts with the right letter, so can I add this word to the list?

Answer: No

Although a XYLOPHONE sounds like it begins with the letter "Z", it does not. The Zambian silimba is a large (usually seventeen note) xylophone so I could add that instead.
5. On my "Z" list, I am going to include a princess who is so famous that she has a series of video games named after her. Who is she?

Answer: Zelda

"The Legend of Zelda" game from Nintendo was released in 1987. It was very popular and many further games have been produced. Some of the games have been so popular that they have been released for more than one game system.
6. I love animals. What is a "Z" place to see lots of animals?

Answer: Zoo

Most people are not lucky enough to live in places where there are lots of animals, so a visit to the zoo is the next best thing. Zoos do a lot of work helping to increase the numbers of animals. One example is the panda. There are more living in the wild now because of the work of zoos and you can find lots of photos and videos of baby pandas online.
7. There are many towns and cities in the world that begin with "Z", but which of these is the capital of a country in Europe?

Answer: Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia, which declared independence in 1991. It had been part of Yugoslavia since 1918.

Zhangjiagang is in China. Zanzibar City is in Africa. Zanesville is in Ohio, USA.
8. For my "Z" list, there is the European musical instrument that looks like a guitar with the long neck missing. What is its name?

Answer: Zither

In simple terms, the zither is just a shaped box with a round hole in the middle to let the sound out and strings stretched across it. A true zither has at least twelve strings and up to fifty, or more depending where it was made. The Alpine Zither has two sets of strings. The second set are on a neck that points down instead of up!

Many many years ago, when I was in school, we made our own instruments for an orchestra and I made a "zither" from a cigar box donated by my uncle. It did not have twelve strings though, but I thought it was perfect just the way that it was.

A Zonkey, also known as a Zebroid, is a foal with a zebra and a horse for its parents.
9. My favourite movie is "It's A Wonderful Life". What is the name of the little girl in it that fits on my "Z" list?

Answer: Zuzu

"It's A Wonderful Life" is often shown on television at Christmas time. It is the story of George Bailey who is so worried that he believes that the world would be a better place if he had never lived. For a short time he gets his wish and learns that he has made a huge difference to the people of his home town. When he returns to his real life, he then finds out that he is well loved too.

Zuzu is one of George's four children and is the one who says, "Teacher says that every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!"
10. As this is the last question of my quiz, I am now off to catch a few zees or zeds! Which "Z" word am I going to do?

Answer: Snooze

Zeds or zees, often written "zzzzzzzzz", are used to indicate that a person is asleep. I told you in the introduction that I am lazy! So now the quiz is finished, I am off for a nap which is another word for a snooze.
