Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fish and
Answer: chips
Fish and chips is the take-away from my childhood when, for me, it was an occasional treat. For many, it was the regular Friday meal that complied with the Roman Catholic dietary rule of fish on Fridays. I well remember the long queues outside the local "chippy" and the sense of anticipation. Please excuse me as I wipe the drool from my chin!
2. Bacon and
Answer: eggs
Bacon and eggs are the base for the traditional English breakfast, although it can be eaten at any time of day. They can be turned into a substantial feast by the addition of extras, limited only by your imagination such as tomato, sausage, black pudding, beans, potato, mushroom and fried bread.
3. Macaroni and
Answer: cheese
Macaroni and cheese is a simple but tasty meal that brings more happy childhood memories for me. You can ring in the changes by the addition of things such as bacon or tuna and a side dish of baked beans or tomato.
4. Boiled beef and
Answer: carrots
According to Wikipedia, "Boiled Beef and Carrots" is a comedic music hall song that was published in 1909. The food of the title was common at the time, but the closest that I ever got to eating it was in a stew or casserole.
5. Bread and
Answer: jam
When I rushed home from school as a child, starving hungry, a slice of bread and jam (jelly in USA) was just enough to keep me going until my dad got home from work and we could all sit down for our evening meal.
6. Curry and
Answer: rice
I grew up in the north of England where we had several Asian neighbours, so curry was a very familiar smell. My mother was very good at stretching the pennies and often turned the left over meat from the Sunday joint into a curry.
7. Steak and
Answer: kidney
Kidney is one of those foods that you either love or hate, as a child. I hated it. As an adult I do not mind eating it as it brings a different texture to a meal as well as an extra flavour. Steak and kidney are often eaten in a pie or a savoury pudding.
8. Strawberries and
Answer: cream
When I was a child, strawberries were a summer treat. As an adult, strawberries are now available all year round. My favourite memory of strawberries is the time that I found some growing wild on the edge of the local woods. After harvesting them, my sister and I looked around and found some broken down brickwork and realised that we were in the fruit patch of a long forgotten cottage.
9. Apple pie and
Answer: custard
Apple pie and custard are another happy memory for me. My mother had a light touch with pastry and I have never tasted one that comes close to the memory of her pies. Drool time again here!
10. Liver and
Answer: onions
Liver and onions is a cheap and filling meal, often unappreciated by children. My mother always said that I was deliberately awkward when it came to food and my love of liver was seen as the exception that proved the rule. I was disappointed that my own children never learned to enjoy it so that it is a meal that does not appear often these days.
