Safe and Sound Trivia Quiz
Safe and Sound was the title handed to me for Commission 50 in the Author's Lounge and it set me off thinking about common three or more word expressions, all connected by the word "and" or "&". Simply match up the two halves. Good Luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bruised black and
Answer: Blue
Although bruises can be black, purple, blue, green and yellow and all shades in between. the common expression just mentions black and blue. Bruises are caused by blood leaking under the skin. Usually they start off dark coloured and as they heal the colours fade gradually away.
2. Mistletoe and
Answer: Wine
The Christmas song "Mistletoe and Wine" was made famous by Sir Cliff Richard when he released it in time for Christmas 1988. The song was actually written for a musical based on the story of "The Little Matchgirl" in 1974 with different lyrics. Sir Cliff changed the lyrics to be more suited to the religious meaning of the season.
3. Oranges and
Answer: Lemons
"Oranges and Lemons" is a traditional English nursery rhyme that has had several different versions of the lyrics over the years. In the version here the next line is, "say the bells of St Clements". There are two churches, St Clement Danes and St Clement Eastcheap, both in London close to places where citrus fruits were off-loaded and both claim to be the original of the rhyme.
4. Fish and
Answer: Chips
Fish and Chips is a traditional English meal, usually from a shop although some brave souls do make it at home. In my opinion, queuing up in a steamy Fish and Chip shop surrounded by the beautiful smells is part of the experience. As a child they were only an occasional treat in my home, but I knew many families that had them every friday.
5. Angels &
Answer: Demons
"Angels & Demons" is the 2000 book by Dan Brown that introduced Robert Langdon to the world. It was followed three years later by "The Da Vinci Code". Both books were made into films starring Tom Hanks as Langdon, although in the reverse order.
6. Raining cats and
Answer: Dogs
If it is "Raining cats and dogs," the rain is coming down very hard indeed, often with wind. There is no definitive answer as to the origin of the expression, although the Library of Congress Science Reference Services say the first similar written usage was in 1651, when Welsh poet Henry Vaughan (1621 - 1695) wrote that the roof was safe against "dogs and cats rained in shower".
7. Salt and
Answer: Pepper
Salt and pepper are the two most common table condiments. Others include, but are not limited to, vinegar, mustard, oil and mayonnaise. There is an American hip-hop/rap trio with a similar name, Salt-N-Pepa.
8. Brush and
Answer: Comb
Back when I was a little girl, all ladies had brush and comb sets. They would range in quality from plastic sets from Woolworth to solid silver antiques and so many variations in between. My mother had a pink plastic set with a painted panel on the back of the brush with matching highlights on the sides of the comb.
9. Bangers and
Answer: Mash
In 1960, Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren had a hit with "Bangers and Mash". Peter was complaining about all of the foreign food being served up to him by the wife that he met in Naples towards the end of WWII. His moan was to "give us a bash at the bangers and mash me mother used to make". On offer were things like minestrone, macaroni and vermicelli when all he wanted was sausages and mashed potato.
10. Mario and
Answer: Luigi
"Mario and Luigi" started off as video game characters in 1981 and 1983 respectively. Since then they have appeared in many other mediums including a live action film, animated film, manga and television shows. Mario has become the face of video games since 1985 when "Super Mario Bros" was released. My daughter, the video games expert, tells me that was the game that revived the video game industry, and in "Super Smash Bros" on Wii U and 3DS, Mario is known as "Mr Video Game".
