Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these girls vowed never to marry?

Answer: Elizabeth I and Kristina

Elizabeth I was known as "The Virgin Queen" because she never married. Kristina did not marry, so her cousin Karl became King of Sweden when she gave up the throne.
2. Which two married a boy named Louis? (Hint: France)

Answer: Eleanor and Marie Antoinette

Eleanor of Aquitaine married Louis VII of France and unexpectedly became Queen after one week of marriage. Marie Antoinette married Louis Auguste, who became Louis XVI of France.
3. Which two girls came from Africa?

Answer: Nzingha and Cleopatra

Of the twenty girls in the series, only these two lived in Africa. Ten lived in Europe (counting the two in western Russia), four lived in the Americas, and four came from Asia.
4. Of the girls from the Americas, whose life was not threatened or changed by Europeans?

Answer: Lady of Palenque

Palenque lived and died many centuries before explorers came from Europe. She lived in Central America, where explorers like Cortes came in the 15th and 16th centuries and conquered the people there.
5. Who did not go on a great journey in her diary?

Answer: Kazunomiya

Kazunomiya stayed in Japan, mostly within the confines of a palace. Catherine's book is even subtitled "The Great Journey" because she traveled from Germany to Russia.
6. Many of the girls became leaders later in their lives. Who did not have the title "Empress"? (Hint: at least one empress was also a queen.)

Answer: Anastasia

Anastasia was a Grand Duchess. The book's subtitle is "The Last Grand Duchess" because she and her family, the Romanovs, were killed during the Russian Revolution, ending the royal line.
7. Some of the royals were warriors! All of these girls took part in battles except for whom?

Answer: Victoria

Anacaona and Ch'iao Kuo wrote of taking part in battles to help their people. Nzingha fought colonials after the events of her diary.
8. Most of the girls had arranged marriages. Who arranged her own marriage?

Answer: Isabel

Isabel was almost married to a man she didn't like. She instead arranged her marriage to Fernando (Ferdinand), a boy she'd never met but who sounded like a better husband than "The Scorpion".
9. Which two girls grew up to be queens who were beheaded?

Answer: Mary, Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette was executed for crimes against France during the French Revolution. Mary Queen of Scots was executed by order of another person in the Royal Diaries series--Elizabeth I.
10. Two diaries are unique because they could not have existed--the girls' cultures didn't have written languages! Who "wrote" these diaries?

Answer: Anacaona and Weetamoo

The authors instead imagined what their diaries would have looked like had they been able to write. Weetamoo drew pictures in hers, as her culture kept some drawn records.
