Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Good Wives" is sometimes published as a continuation of "Little Women" and sometimes as a sequel. For this quiz I am treating it as a sequel. How long after the events of "Little Women" does this story take place?

Answer: Three years

The chapter entitled "Gossip" brings the reader up-to-date with what has been happening to the March family since we last saw them. This includes Mr March and John Brooke and details about the upcoming wedding.
2. Who is the first sister to marry?

Answer: Meg

Meg marries John Brooke, who had been Laurie's tutor in the previous book. He had joined the army, where he was injured and invalided home. One of Meg's friends has recently married and she knows her wedding will not be as big or fashionable as Sally's. She makes her own wedding dress and the family all work together to make it a perfect day.
3. What is "The Spread Eagle"?

Answer: The newspaper that published Jo's stories

In "Little Women", Laurie catches Jo coming out of a building and believes she has been to the dentist. The offices of "The Spread Eagle" are in the same building, and they have paid her for her first short story.
4. What is the name of the house John has prepared for Meg and himself?

Answer: The Dovecote

The name was coined by Laurie who said the couple went around like a pair of turtledoves, billing and cooing. We read of the house and furnishings and the sisters making sure it is perfect for the newly-weds, right down to Amy putting different coloured soaps in the rooms.
5. Amy has a talent that is mentioned in "Little Women" and she has continued in the time since. What is this talent?

Answer: Art

Amy is an artist, she works with charcoal, watercolours, clay and plaster. She works hard at this and becomes proficient.
6. We see a lot of Meg and John's early married life, including Meg's attempts at cooking. Do they have any children?

Answer: Yes, twins

Meg gives birth to twins, John and Margaret. Margaret is nicknamed Daisy to distinguish her from mother and grandmother and they consider Jack for John. It is Laurie who suggests Demijohn, shortened to Demi. Rather cute I think.
7. Who goes to Europe with Aunt Carrol?

Answer: Amy

When Jo and Amy go to tea with Aunt March, their Aunt Carrol is also there. During the conversation Jo is very forthright about things, which causes Aunt Carrol to make a decision. She is making a trip to Europe with her daughter Flo and had planned to take Jo; she now decides to take Amy. Jo is very upset as she has always longed to visit Europe but realises she has done this herself.
8. Where does Jo go, and who does she meet there?

Answer: New York, Professor Bhaer

Jo goes to New York where she stays in a guest house owned by Mrs Kirke, whose young daughters she tutors. There she meets another guest, Professor Bhaer, with whom she becomes friends. Professor Bhaer is supporting his two young nephews, Franz and Emil. Jo corresponds with the Professor after she returns home when Beth becomes ill.
9. What happens in the chapter "Valley of the Shadow"?

Answer: Beth dies

I still can't read this chapter without sobbing. The character of Beth is based on Alcott's own sister, and you can feel her pain as she describes Beth's last moments with her family.
10. As we come to the end of the book, who do we see getting married?

Answer: Amy marries Laurie and Jo marries Professor Bhaer.

Laurie DOES marry a woman he meets in Europe, he marries Amy. Professor Bhaer comes to visit the Marches and discovers Amy has married Laurie; he had assumed Jo was in love with him. Professor Bhaer is welcomed into the family and he and Jo are married.
