Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alphard Black
Answer: Slytherin
Alphard Black attended Hogwarts (although it's unclear when), and was sorted into Slytherin. He came from a whole family of Slytherins, with the only exception being his nephew, Sirius, who was in Gryffindor. After his death, his image was burnt off the Black Family tree tapestry, because he left money to Sirius.
2. Rubeus Hagrid
Answer: Gryffindor
Rubeus Hagrid attended Hogwarts in the early 1940s, and was sorted into Gryffindor. He is not a fully-qualified wizard, having been expelled from Hogwarts in his third year. His expulsion was the result of accusations, which would later prove to be false, regarding the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, which led to the death of a Muggle-born student.
Despite being expelled, Hagrid was allowed to stay to Hogwarts and now works as Gamekeeper.
3. Garrick Ollivander
Answer: Ravenclaw
Garrick Ollivander attended Hogwarts (though it's unclear when) and was sorted into Ravenclaw. After leaving school, he went into the family business and became one of the most famous wand-makers. He owns the wand shop in Diagon Alley and has an uncanny ability to remember every single wand he's ever sold.
4. Newton Scamander
Answer: Hufflepuff
Newton Artemis Fido Scamander attended Hogwarts in the early 1900s, and was sorted into Hufflepuff. His interest in magical beasts eventually led to his expulsion when he endangered the lives of other people. He later worked at the Ministry of Magic before becoming an author and a famous magizoologist.
5. Silvanus Kettleburn
Answer: Hufflepuff
Silvanus Kettleburn attended Hogwarts (though it's unclear when), and was sorted into Hufflepuff. After graduating from Hogwarts, he became the Professor of Care of Magical Creatures, a subject he's presumed to have been very good at. In the early 1990s, Professor Kettleburn retired to spend to more time with his remaining limbs. His job was later given to Rubeus Hagrid.
6. Tom Riddle
Answer: Slytherin
Tom Riddle attended Hogwarts from 1938-1945, and was sorted into Slytherin. In 1943, he opened the Chamber of Secrets, allowing the creature within it to attack Muggle-born students. After the death of Myrtle Warren, the Ministry of Magic threatened to close the school. To avoid having to live permanently in the Muggle orphanage where he was born, Tom framed a fellow student, Rubeus Hagrid, claiming that Hagrid's pet spider, Aragog, was responsible for the attacks. Hagrid was expelled and Tom received a special award for services to the school.
It was also around this time that Tom began using the name that would come to be feared by the majority of the Wizarding world...Lord Voldemort.
7. Albus Dumbledore
Answer: Gryffindor
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore attended Hogwarts from 1892-1899, and was sorted into Gryffindor. After graduating from Hogwarts, he planned to take a trip around the world with his friend, Elphias Doge, but was forced to remain behind due to the unexpected death of his mother, Kendra. Two months later, a violent duel erupted between Albus, his brother, Aberforth, and a close friend, Gellert Grindelwald.
The duel only ended when Albus's sister, Ariana, was killed by a stray curse. Albus later returned to Hogwarts as the Professor of Transfiguration, eventually becoming Headmaster.
8. Myrtle Warren
Answer: Ravenclaw
Myrtle Elizabeth Warren attended Hogwarts in the early 1940s, and was sorted into Ravenclaw. Being a constant target for bullies, Myrtle didn't find much happiness at school. One classmate in particular, Olive Hornby, regularly teased Myrtle about her glasses.
In June 1943, the Chamber of Secrets was opened and a number of Muggle-born students were attacked by a mysterious creature. On one particular day, Olive was doing her usual bullying, causing Myrtle to run away crying. Hours passed with no sign of Myrtle, so the current Headmaster, Professor Dippet, asked Olive to go and look for her. Olive eventually found Myrtle dead in the first floor girls' bathroom. Now known as Moaning Myrtle, her ghost continues to haunt the bathroom where she died.
9. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington
Answer: Gryffindor
Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington attended Hogwarts (though it's unclear when) and was sorted into Gryffindor. As an adult, he worked in the court of King Henry VII. On October 30th, 1492, he met Lady Grieve. His attempt to straighten her crooked teeth backfired, causing her to grow tusks.
As a result of this mistake, Sir Nicholas was arrested and sentenced to death by beheading. Unfortunately, the executioner's axe was blunt and it took forty-five whacks to cause death. Even then, Sir Nicholas's head was still partially attached. Now known as Nearly-Headless Nick, he's the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower.
10. Grogan Stump
Answer: Hufflepuff
