Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the spell that Hermione Granger used in the movie 'Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone' to set fire to Professor Snape's robes during Harry's first Quidditch match?

Answer: Lacarnum Inflammarae

Hermione used 'Lacarnum Inflamarae' in the movie to set fire to Snape's robes as she thought Snape was jinxing Harry's broom. They did not know the spell 'Incendio' yet. Alhough it was actually Professor Quirrell who was jinxing Harry's broom, the spell broke the connection between his eye and Harry's broom, and Harry managed to get up on his broom successfully.
2. What was the spell that Tom Riddle used in the second Harry Potter film, 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', to try and kill Aragog?

Answer: Arania Exumai

Tom Riddle used 'Arania Exumia' in an attempt to kill Aragog as he planned to frame Hagrid and prove Aragog was the monster living in the 'Chamber of Secrets'. It was an effective spell to kill acromantulas (Aragog's species). Harry later used it to kill some acromantulas while escaping from a herd of them in the Forbidden Forest, before the flying car of Ron's dad arrived to help them.
3. What is the spell that Hermione used in the book 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' to levitate a tree and hide the trio while they were in Madam Rosmerta's pub?

Answer: Mobiliarbus

'Mobiliarbus' was the spell Hermione used to levitate the tree, while 'Mobilicorpus' was used to levitate the unconscious Professor Snape. The spell 'Locomotar tree' might have been helpful, but no version of the 'Locomotar' charm was seen until 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', where Tonks first used the charm to levitate Harry's trunk.
4. 'Reducio' is same as 'Reducto'.

Answer: false

'Reducio' is not same as ' Reducto'. 'Reducio' shrinks an object while 'Reducto' blasts an object. Harry learnt the spell 'Reducto' while preparing for the Triwizard Tournament, so that he could blast barriers. Barty Crouch, Jr., in the guise of Mad-eye Moody, demonstrated the action of the spell 'Reducio' on an engorged spider, previously exposed to the Cruciatus Curse.
5. What is the incantation of the vanishing charm?

Answer: Evanesco

The incantation of the vanishing charm is 'Evanesco'. It was first used by Bill Weasley to vanish some parchments in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Later, Professor Snape used this charm to clean Harry's cauldron when he could not perfect his strengthening solution, a potion common for O.W.L.s.
6. What does 'Langlock' do?

Answer: Glues one's tongue to the roof of ones mouth

Harry learned th spell "Langlock" from the Half-blood Prince's book. He used it to stop Peeves from talking. It was one of the many useful spells in the Prince's book, others being 'Muffliato' and the extremely dangerous dark curse, 'Sectumsempra'.
7. If you need to blast a door, but cannot remember 'Bombarda', 'Expulso' or 'Reducto', what spell can you use instead?

Answer: Confringo

'Confringo' is the same as a blasting hex. Harry used it on the sidecar of Sirius' motorbike to blast it and escape other Death Eaters. 'Alohomora' only opens a door, it does not blast it. 'Relashio' would not work either, as it opens bindings but cannot blast open a door.
8. Other than Severus Snape, only one Hogwarts' Professor was seen using an unforgivable curse. Who was it?

Answer: Minerva McGonagall

McGonagall used the Imperius curse on one of the Carrows. Alastor Moody did not use unforgivable curses, but Barty Crouch, Jr., who was impersonating him, did. Since the use of unforgivable curses was legalised during the Second Wizarding War, McGonagall escaped Azkaban, which was previously the only punishment for use of unforgivable curses on a human being.
9. What spell did Remus Lupin use in the third movie, 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', to freeze the Whomping Willow?

Answer: Immobulus

In the third movie, 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', when Harry and Hermione went back in time, they saw Remus Lupin cast this spell to freeze the Whomping Willow before going in. The spell 'Immobulus' had been used previously by Hermione to freeze the escaped pixies in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'.

It is unknown whether 'Stupefy' or 'Petrificus Totalus' would have worked on the Whomping Willow, as it is a tree.
10. Which spell did Dumbledore probably use to locate Harry in the book 'Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone', even when he was under the invisibility cloak?

Answer: Homenum revelio

'Homenum revelio' can be used to locate unseen humans. Hermione cast this charm to check if the Grimmauld Place house was empty. Dumbledore used it to locate Harry in 'Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone'. Anti-disillusionment charms would not have worked, as Harry's cloak was one of the Deathly Hallows and a true cloak of invisibility. 'Specialis Revealio' would not have worked either, as it reveals magical secrets, but cannot locate a human being.
