Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Transforms a Boggart into something silly

Answer: Riddikulus

The spell was first used in Defense Against the Dark Arts class (during "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"). The teacher would release a Boggart, which showed that witch or wizard's fears. The student would cast the spell and turn their fear into something funny.
2. Erases a person's memory

Answer: Obliviate

This is the charm that Prof. Lockhart used in the second book ("Harry Potter and the Chamber of the Secrets") to wipe out the memories of the witches and wizards he would steal his stories from. It's also the spell he used to accidentally wipe out his own memory. Later in the series, Hermione used it on her own parents to erase their memory of her.
3. Causes a "forever" cut

Answer: Sectumsempra

Severus Snape invented the spell. The Latin meaning of the words literally translates to "Forever Cut". Harry used the spell during the sixth book ("Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince") while fighting with Draco Malfoy. Snape recognized it immediately, and was able to heal Malfoy's wounds.
4. Kills most people that it is cast toward

Answer: Avada Kedavra

This is the curse that Voldemort used to kill Harry's parents, and cast at Harry himself when he was a baby. That's how Harry got the scar on his forehead and became known as the "boy who lived" (as recounted during "Harry Potter and thh Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone"). Later in the series, Voldemort cast the spell at Harry again, only to end up ultimately killing himself (in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows").
5. Unlocks most locked doors

Answer: Alohomora

This spell was first used in the first book ("Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone"). Hermione cast it to let herself, Ron and Harry into a locked door in a hallway that was off limits. Fluffy the three-headed dog was guarding a trap door inside that locked room.
6. Lights up the tip of a wand

Answer: Lumos

Lumos is used often as witches and wizards are seen wandering around at night, or in dark areas. Harry even uses it under his invisibility cloak sometimes. It's used to basically turn a wand into a flashlight.
7. Disarms an opposing witch or wizard

Answer: Expelliarmus

This charm is used a lot throughout the series. Often members of the Order of the Phoenix, and other "good" witches and wizards used it while fighting. They often tried to disarm, rather than kill their opponents.
8. Makes an object or person float

Answer: Wingardium Leviosa

Dean was known to mess this spell up early in his Hogwart's career. In the first book ("Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone"), he managed to catch a feather on fire while trying to levitate it. It was one of the first spells that Harry, Ron and Hermione were taught in a classroom. Hermione, of course, was the first to master it.
9. Attracts an object to the witch/wizard casting the spell.

Answer: Accio

Once the students are taught this one, it's seen a lot for the rest of the series. Harry and Hermione both even tried to use the simple spell to best Voldemort's magic and attract his horcruxes. That didn't work. But it did work to attract things like broomsticks and other items.
10. Calls forth a Patronus

Answer: Expecto Patronum

The Patronus charm is easy to learn, but hard to master. The Patronus, always taking the shape of some type of animal, is used primarily to defend against Dementors. Later (in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") it was also used by Snape to help Harry and Ron find the Sword of Gryffindor and destroy Slytherin's locket.
