"Harry Potter": Not Who You Think! Quiz

Extenuating circumstances and complexity of plot lead to some unexpected answers to seemingly-obvious questions. Also beware of differences between book and movie - remember, this is a quiz about the books (all seven) by J.K. Rowling.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who owned the flying motorcycle that first brought Harry to the Dursleys?

Answer: Sirius

This was briefly mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone", but the full story came out in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", when Hagrid wailingly described his encounter with Sirius just after the Potters' deaths.
2. In "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone", who discovered the identity of Nicolas Flamel after the three friends spent countless hours looking for his name in the library?

Answer: Harry

Harry thought all along that he'd read the name somewhere, but couldn't remember just where - until Neville handed him a Dumbledore chocolate frog card, identical to the first Harry had ever seen.
3. In "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone", who took on Crabbe and Goyle single-handedly? (To my knowledge, this only happened once.)

Answer: Neville

Wanting to prove himself worthy of his school house, and with the advice to stand up for himself ringing in his ears, when Ron retaliated against Draco's endless snide remarks by fighting him, Neville backed him up by attacking Draco's ubiquitous cronies. The outcome was pretty much as you'd expect.
4. In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", whose idea was it to drop the vanishing cabinet in the room above Filch's office, thus saving Harry from an unwarranted punishment?

Answer: Nearly-Headless Nick

Nick persuaded Peeves to drop the cabinet to distract Filch from punishing Harry. The broken vanishing cabinet reappears (so to speak) in "Order of the Phoenix" and is, of course, instrumental in the invasion of Hogwarts in "Half-Blood Prince".
5. In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", who stole the ingredients for Polyjuice Potion from Snape's office?

Answer: Hermione

This was a strategic move, as Harry and Ron were already in danger of being expelled, and Hermione had - thus far - "a clean record".
6. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", who hit Draco when he was ridiculing Hagrid for crying about Buckbeak?

Answer: Hermione

Taking twelve classes at the same time - more or less literally - and cramming far more than 24 hours into a day to do it had an interesting effect on her personality. (For extra fun, see if you can name the twelve classes.)
7. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", who grew the hedge maze for the third task in the Triwizard Tournament?

Answer: Professor Hagrid

As the hedge was grown on the Quidditch field, Cedric's first reaction was indignation. Neither he nor Harry could take in what they were seeing until they were assured that the field would be put back to normal after the task.
8. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", who berated Harry for earning detention when he was supposed to be at Quidditch try-outs, insisting that he get out of it even if it meant saying that "You-Know-Who" was a figment of his imagination?

Answer: Angelina Johnson

Harry was so shocked at the severity of her reaction that he jokingly suggested that Oliver - having by now graduated and gone professional - had died during a training session and Angelina was now "channeling his spirit".
9. In "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", who gave Harry a Christmas gift of maggots?

Answer: Kreacher

No, Cho wasn't that vindictive nor Mr. Weasley that clueless. Even the Dursleys never gave Harry something quite that disgusting - although Vernon's used socks might almost qualify. As for Kreacher, clearly this was before Harry got onto his good side.
10. In "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", who attacked the Minister of Magic in the final battle at Hogwarts?

Answer: Percy

By this point, Fudge was replaced, his replacement was dead, and an imperiused Thicknesse was officially minister - puppeted, of course, by Voldemort and friends. While attacking his boss, Percy shouted, "Did I mention I'm resigning?" thus giving Fred Weasley (nearby) the last laugh of his short life.
