'Harry Potter' Sibling Sets Trivia Quiz

Harry Potter might have been an only child, but some characters from J.K. Rowling's magical world did have brothers and sisters. Can you match each set of siblings with the surname they shared (at least until some of the sisters got married)?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Albus, Aberforth and Ariana

Answer: Dumbledore

Of the three Dumbledore siblings, the eldest brother, Albus (or to give him his full name, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian) was by far the most famous, powerful and successful. He was headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot and Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards in addition to having being immortalised on a chocolate frog card for his defeat of the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (who also turned out to be his former best friend).

Professor Dumbledore's younger brother and sister weren't properly introduced until the events of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' when Aberforth was identified as the barman of the Hog's Head and it was revealed that Ariana had been killed in the crossfire of a teenage duel between Albus, Aberforth and Gellert Grindelwald. A portrait of Ariana marked the entrance of a secret tunnel between Aberforth's pub and Hogwarts, which allowed Harry and his friends to enter the school prior to his final battle against Lord Voldemort.
2. Morfin and Merope

Answer: Gaunt

Morfin and Merope Gaunt both died years before the events of the 'Harry Potter' novels. In 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' they are seen through the memories of Bob Ogden of the Ministry of Magic when he visited the Gaunt Shack following accusations that Morfin Gaunt had attacked a local muggle. Morfin and his father Marvolo subsequently ended up in Azkaban, while Merope - a downtrodden witch with a talent for creating love potions - tricked a handsome young muggle into marrying her and then died giving birth to Tom Marvolo Riddle, aka Lord Voldemort.

Lord Voldemort later returned to his ancestral home as a teenager, murdered his muggle grandparents, implicated his Uncle Morfin for the crime and turned the Gaunt family's heirloom ring (and one of the three items that made up the Deathly Hallows) into a horcrux.
3. Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa

Answer: Black

The three Black sisters, cousins of Harry Potter's godfather Sirius Black, all met different fates as a result of their family's obsession with blood purity and association with Lord Voldemort.

Bellatrix married Rodolphus Lestrange and became one of Voldemort's most honoured Death Eaters. A lengthy incarceration in Azkaban after his first fall from power resulted in the loss of both her beauty and her sanity and she was eventually killed during the final battle at Hogwarts by Molly Weasley.

Andromeda married a muggle named Ted Tonks and was immediately disowned by all her pure blood relatives. She lost both her husband and daughter Nymphadora (better known simply as Tonks) during the events of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' and was left to bring up her orphaned grandson, Teddy Lupin.

Narcissa married the wealthy Death Eater Lucius Malfoy and spent many years living in luxury at Malfoy Manor with him and their only son, Draco. Narcissa's loyalty was to her family rather than Voldemort and she eventually betrayed him when she lied and told him that Harry Potter was dead after the confrontation in the Forbidden Forest.
4. Fleur and Gabrielle

Answer: Delacour

French sisters Fleur and Gabrielle Delacour made their first appearances during the Triwizard Tournament in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. Fleur was competing in the tournament for the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Gabrielle was the loved one that Fleur was expected to rescue from the depths of the Black Lake in the second task. However, Fleur got caught by some grindylows and was unable to reach her sister, who was instead brought to the surface by Harry Potter (who was only supposed to rescue Ron Weasley, but got some extra credit for protecting Gabrielle as well).

Fleur went on to marry Bill Weasley - Ron's eldest brother - at the start of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'. Gabrielle was one of her bridesmaids.
5. Rabastan and Rodolphus

Answer: Lestrange

The Lestrange brothers, Rabastan and Rodolphus, were both members of a pure blood wizarding family and part of Lord Voldemort's elite group of supporters known as the Death Eaters. The pair, along with Rodolphus' wife Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr., were responsible for torturing Neville Longbottom's parents into insanity and spent the whole of the time between Lord Voldemort's fall from power after his initial attack on Harry Potter and his return at the end of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' imprisoned in Azkaban.
6. Colin and Dennis

Answer: Creevey

Colin and Dennis Creevey were a somewhat unusual set of siblings in that they were both muggle-born but magical. Elder brother Colin started at Hogwarts School the year after Harry Potter and was one of Harry's biggest fans. Colin was an avid photographer and was often spotted wandering around with his camera almost constantly in front of his eyes. This trait saved his life when he saw the basilisk through his camera's viewfinder in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' - if he'd seen it with his naked eye then he would have been killed rather than just petrified.

Dennis Creevey joined his brother at Hogwarts in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' and made a notable entrance after being rescued by a giant squid after falling into the Black Lake on his way to be sorted. Both brothers later joined Dumbledore's Army and Colin returned to Hogwarts to fight Lord Voldemort during the final events of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', but was killed in the battle.
7. Molly, Gideon and Fabian

Answer: Prewett

Gideon and Fabian Prewett were two members of the original Order of the Phoenix who were killed during the First Wizarding War - long before the events detailed in the 'Harry Potter' series of novels. However, their sister Molly was a major character in the books under her married name of Mrs Weasley. She was the mother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny Weasley and a mother-figure to the best friend of her son Ron - the orphaned Harry Potter. She also later became Harry's mother-in-law after he married her only daughter Ginny.

Molly's Prewett heritage wasn't mentioned much in the books, but she did give her late brother Fabian's watch to Harry Potter on his 17th birthday - since it was traditional for a wizard to receive a watch when he came of age.
8. Petunia and Lily

Answer: Evans

Sisters Petunia Dursley and Lily Potter shared the maiden name of Evans - a fact that became clear when various characters shared their memories of Harry's mother during the events of the 'Harry Potter' series. While Petunia and her parents were muggles, Lily was a muggle-born witch whose magical abilities were disdained by Petunia - perhaps because she was secretly jealous that she didn't share the same skills.

When Lily was killed by Lord Voldemort while trying to protect her young son Harry, her sacrifice placed a lasting magical protection on him as long as he continued to live with one of Lily's blood relatives.

The only candidate was her sister Petunia who was also married with a young son. Sadly this similarity between the two sisters could not overcome the differences caused by magic and Petunia and her husband mistreated her nephew for years until he was finally old enough to attend Hogwarts and learn about his heritage.
9. Antioch, Cadmus and Ignotus

Answer: Peverell

The Peverell brothers were part of ancient wizarding history and myth, so did not make any direct appearances in the 'Harry Potter' series. Instead they were believed to be the men featured in 'The Tale of Three Brothers' - one of the stories in 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard' that told how three brothers obtained magical objects from a personification of Death. The objects - an unbeatable elder wand, a stone that could resurrect the dead and an invisibility cloak - were collectively known as the Deathly Hallows and it was believed that anyone who owned all three would have protection from death.

In 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', Harry deduced that his invisibility cloak was the same one as that mentioned in the story and that he was a direct descendent of Ignotus Peverell, whose grave he had seen near that of his parents in Godric's Hollow. He also later obtained the resurrection stone (which had been hidden in a snitch by Professor Dumbledore) and gained the allegiance of the elder wand when he disarmed Draco Malfoy at Malfoy Manor. Lord Voldemort (a descendant of Cadmus Peverell), who physically possessed the wand, was defeated when he tried to use it against Harry in the final battle.
10. Alecto and Amycus

Answer: Carrow

Alecto and Amycus Carrow were another pair of sibling Death Eaters, although in this case they were brother (Amycus) and sister (Alecto). The pair made their first appearance in 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' when they took part in the Death Eater raid on Hogwarts that resulted in the death of Professor Dumbledore.

They then returned to Hogwarts the following year as members of the teaching staff, after both the school and the wizarding world fell under the control of Lord Voldemort and Professor Snape was installed as the new headmaster. Amycus Carrow became the new Dark Arts teacher, while Alecto taught Muggle Studies - both were noted for their cruelty towards the students and for promoting Voldemort's anti-muggle and pro-pure blood philosophy.
