Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're in a pitch black room. You can feel your wand and take it out. What spell will help you see in the dark room?

Answer: Lumos

Lumos makes light glow on the tip of your wand. To extinguish the light you say Nox. Lumos Maxima intensifies the light and Lumos Solem makes a beam of light come out of the tip of your wand. Lumos was used by Harry in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" so Harry could see the Marauder's Map at night in the dark corridors of Hogwarts.

Hermione used Lumos Solem to get Ron out of the Devil's Snare in "The Sorcerer's Stone". And Lumos Maxima was used by Harry in "The Order of the Phoenix" to read in the dark at Number 4 Privet Drive.
2. You see a Death Eater. She turns on the light in the room. You no longer need the light your wand is producing, so you use Nox to put it out. The Death Eater uses a spell to blast you against the wall, almost knocking you unconscious, but what spell is it?

Answer: Stupefy

Stupefy is known as the Stunning Spell. It blasts you back and/or knocks you out.For example, Hermione used it on Dolores Umbridge in "The Deathly Hallows (Part 2 in movies)" so she and Harry could get the Slytherin Locket Horcrux off of her. The spell knocked her out and they managed to get the Locket.
3. You realize the Death Eater is none other than Bellatrix Lestrange. She uses a curse she's well known for. It hits you and causes excruciating pain. What curse did Bellatrix just use?

Answer: Crucio, the Cruciatus Curse

This curse is one of the three Unforgivable Curses, along with Imperio and Avada Kedavra. Imperio makes you under the control of the user and Avada Kedavra is the Killing Curse which only one person has ever survived, Harry Potter. When hit by Crucio, it causes excruciating pain. Bellatrix loves this curse and used it to torture Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice, into insanity trying to get information out of them.

It will only work properly when you really want someone to feel pain. Harry learned this when he tried to use it on Bellatrix for killing Sirius Black in "The Order of the Phoenix".

It just knocked her to the ground.
4. Next, Bellatrix tries to hit you with Stupefy, the Stunning Spell (again). How do you block her attack?

Answer: Protego

Protego forms a protective shield in front of the user. By adding different things to the end, you can makes shields around certain areas. The shield causes the spell shot at you to bounce back at the one who cast the spell. The user of Protego does not get hit. Professor Flitwick and Molly Weasley used an advanced version of Protego -Protego Maxima- to form a protective shield around Hogwarts.

It can be used in its original version to block spells in the Harry Potter video games, including "The Deathly Hallows Part 2".

In the video games Expelliarmus can be used to break down Protego. (But not disarm opponents, for extra information.)
5. Bellatrix avoids the blast sent back at her. Now it's your turn to shoot. Which spell would be most useful to you in order to overcome Bellatrix?

Answer: Expelliarmus

Expelliarmus is the Disarming Spell. It sends the victim's wand flying out of their hand. They usually can't retrieve it. This is about as useful as Stupefy, which Harry said is a wizard's bread and butter. It disarms your opponent, which is extremely helpful. Stupefy blasts your opponent against whatever's behind them and/or knocks them unconscious.

They're both very important spells. Expelliarmus was used by Snape to disarm Lupin and then Harry to disarm Snape, but it blew Snape into a bed and knocked him out.
6. Bellatrix decides to make sure you can't cast any more spells verbally. What could she cast to do this?

Answer: Silencio

Silencio is a spell used to make the victim's voice temporarily disappear. Without being able to say the incantation of a spell, the voiceless wizard can't perform a spell, and therefore can't hurt you. -Though some spells are cast without even using wands.- It was used in "The Order of the Phoenix" book by someone I forgot to silence Antonin Dolohov.

He eventually got his voice back and was able to cast spells against Dumbledore's Army and the Order of the Phoenix.
7. You avoid Bellatrix's shot and blast her. Her legs become stuck to each other. What did you just say?

Answer: Locomotor Mortis

The Leg Locker Curse, or Locomotor Mortis, is a spell used to make someone's legs get stuck together. They can't move them in any way. In "The Sorcerer's Stone", Malfoy cast this spell on Neville and he had to bunny hop back up the Gryffindor Common Room where Hermione preformed the counter-curse.

But in the movie there was a deleted scene where he bunny hops to the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall where Seamus Finnigan offers to preform the counter-curse. Neville says sarcastically that that was just what he needed, Seamus setting his kneecaps on fire. Seamus was insulted by this and left without undoing the spell cast on Neville, but he has a small bald spot on the back of his head, presumably from yet another explosion he created.
8. Bellatrix performs the counter-curse for your spell and knocks you off your feet. What did she say?

Answer: Flipendo

Flipendo knocks your opponent off their feet. It is called the Knock-Back Jinx. It can be used in the Duelling Club on the Harry Potter website created by J.K. Rowling, Pottermore. Professor Quirrell taught it to his first year class in "The Sorcerer's Stone".
9. You get up and hoist Bellatrix up by her ankle. She is stuck upside down in the air. What spell did you just perform?

Answer: Levicorpus

Levicorpus was presumably used on Snape by James Potter in one of Snape's memories. Harry watched James bully Snape in the Pensieve. It causes you to be hung in the air, upside down, by your ankle. It leaves you pretty much helpless and at the caster's mercy.
10. You drop her and cast the Full Body Bind, Petrificus Totalus on her. What spell do you use to erase Bellatrix's memory of you, being a Death Eater, and being a wizard?

Answer: Obliviate

Obliviate erases the memory of whoever you aim your wand at. It can erase the memory of whatever you whish someone to forget. It is the only spell Gilderoy Lockhart was capable of casting, and is how other people forgot they did the things Lockhart took the credit for.

It's also the reason he forgot he was a wizard. Hermione used it on her parents so they would be safe from Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Because they wouldn't remember her, Hermione disappeared from all their pictures. She later used it on two Death Eaters in a Muggle restaurant.
