Harry prevented him from doing this.

He sneaked out with the Cloak all alone so that he could visit the Restricted Section of the Library and find out about Nicholas Flamel; however, he was unable to do so as he picked up the silver and black volume and opened it.

It screamed loudly, and continued screaming even after he shut it. He was almost caught by Filch and Snape, but managed to escape.

Once in the chamber of Snape's Potions puzzle, purple flames had sprung up in front of the door leading back to the Chess chamber, and black flames in front of the one leading ahead to the Mirror of Erised. A small piece of paper held a puzzle with clues to tell the reader which bottle would send the drinker back through the purple flames, and which one forward through the black flames.

Hermione solved the puzzle. She drank the bottle to go back, whereas Harry went on.
