Through Tom's memory, Harry sees Professor Dumbledore when he was younger, and also Hagrid, as a schoolboy. Professor Dumbledore was the Transfigurations teacher, in Riddle's time.

Harry gets unexpected help from Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix who brings the Sorting Hat to the Chamber. Harry finds the sword inside the hat. Harry fights the giant Basilisk, and defeats it. He then kills Tom Riddle by stabbing the Basilisk's fang through the diary. Professor Dumbledore later tells Harry that the sword belonged to Godric Gryffindor. Only a true Gryffindor could had pulled the sword from the hat.

Dobby indicates to Harry that Mr Malfoy hid the diary in Ginny's book, when they met in Flourish and Blotts. Harry makes Mr Malfoy give Dobby Harry's sock. This releases Dobby from the services of Mr Malfoy.
