Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What occurrence made Uncle Vernon finally decide to lock Harry up and forbid him to return to Hogwarts?

Answer: Receiving a letter saying that Harry was forbidden to perform magic outside of school

The pudding, the letter and the loss of the sale all contributed to Uncle Vernon's anger, but before the letter arrived from the Ministry of Magic, Vernon was worried about magical repercussions on Harry's part. Once he knew about the restrictions, he realized that he could lock Harry up without Harry being able to free himself with magic.
2. Where was Harry when he first heard the voice that no one else could hear?

Answer: serving detention with Professor Lockhart

Because they had arrived at school in a flying car which had been spotted by as many as six or seven Muggles, and had caused considerable damage to a Whomping Willow tree, they were forced to serve detentions. Ron got to spend his with Filch polishing trophies, and Harry was forced to help Lockhart answer his fan mail.
3. Where were Ron, Harry and Hermione coming from when Harry next heard the voice, leading them to discover the writing on the wall and the petrified Mrs. Norris?

Answer: from Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party

Because they went to Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party, they missed the Halloween banquet. Snape used this absence, along with the fact that they were found at the scene of the crime so to speak, as a reason to suspect them as being somehow responsible for pertrifying Mrs. Norris. Second year students aren't allowed to go to Hogsmeade.
4. Snape did not believe that Harry was being completely honest about why he was in that corridor, and suggested that he not be allowed to play Quidditch until he was more forthcoming.

Answer: True

Snape was notorious for both picking on Harry, and for favouring his own house. Denying Harry the right to play Quidditch would definitely accomplish both. Professor McGonagall was quick to point out that such a punishment would be ridiculous because the cat had not been petrified by being hit by a broom.
5. The caretaker Filch hates and is hated by most of the students at Hogwarts. Why does Ron think Filch is so bitter?

Answer: Filch is a Squib

When in a particularly foul mood, Flich hauled Harry into his office for the crime of dragging mud from the Quidditch pitch through the halls. Left alone while Filch went to investigate some other infraction (Peeves knocking over a cabinet), Harry discovered that Filch was taking a correspondence 'Kwikspell' course. Ron concluded that Filch must be a Squib, which is a person born into a magical family, but without any magical powers of their own.
6. Who explains to the class about the legend of 'The Chamber of Secrets'?

Answer: Professor Binns

Binns is the History of Magic teacher, and is the only teacher who is a ghost. Hermione asks him to explain about 'The Chamber of Secrets', and he reluctantly does so, insisting that it doesn't exist. In the movie it is Professor McGonagall who tells the class about it, after being questioned by Hermione. Binns has not appeared in either of the two movies.
7. Why does Ron not like spiders?

Answer: Fred turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was three

While examining the area where Mrs. Norris had been attacked, Harry asks Ron to check out the bizarre behaviour of a bunch of spiders who seemed desperate to escape through a small crack in the window. Ron relates the experience of having his teddy bear turned into a giant spider by Fred, because Ron broke Fred's toy broomstick.
8. Who catches them coming out of Moaning Myrtle's bathroom and deducts five points from Gryffindor?

Answer: Percy Weasley

Hermione had taken them into the washroom to talk to Moaning Myrtle, and to see if all the water that had been on the floor the night that Mrs. Norris was attacked had come from her bathroom. Percy spotted them just as they were coming out of the washroom and he and Ron had an argument which resulted in Percy fining his own house.
9. Not counting cats or ghosts, how many students were petrified by the Basilisk in this book (not a previous appearance)?

Answer: four

Colin Creevey was the first student attacked, then Justin Finch-Fletchley (along with Nearly Headless Nick), and then Hermione was attacked at the same time as Penelope Clearwater (Percy's girlfriend and fellow prefect). In the movie only three students get petrified, as Hermione is attacked on her own.
10. While in the Chamber of Secrets, who or what reminded Harry about the existence of the diary, giving him the idea to stab it with the Basilisk's fang, thereby destroying Tom Riddle and saving Ginny?

Answer: Fawkes

After healing Harry's wound with his tears, (in the movie this does not happen until after Ginny wakes up), Fawkes flew away, picked up the diary and dropped it in Harry's lap. This prompted Harry to stab the book, using the venom in the fang to help destroy the book's powers.
