Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Maureen Little's old school?

Answer: Mazeley Manor

Maureen talks incessantly about her old school, much to the annoyance of Darrell and friends, as new girls are supposed to be quiet. Alicia can't resist being sarcastic and mentioning how girls at Mazeley Manor failed their exams, but her sarcasm goes over Maureen's head. Mam'zelle Dupont mistakenly calls it 'Measly Manor', much to the delight of the girls, who use the nickname every time Maureen mentions Mazeley Manor. Unlike Malory Towers, it was a poor school with little to no discipline; Maureen has wonky teeth because she refused to wear a wire while at Mazeley Manor, and realises that if she had been at Malory Towers, Matron would have insisted on her wearing it.
2. What do the girls do when they see Gwendoline Lacey saying goodbye to her mother?

Answer: Stand at the window pretending to cry

As anyone who's read the first book in the 'Malory Towers' series will know, Gwendoline and her mother always have a very dramatic parting, and when Gwendoline arrives at school, the girls stand at the window with handkerchiefs and pretend to cry. Mr Lacey finds it funny, but Mrs Lacey and Gwendoline do not. Mr Lacey warns Gwendoline that he expects her to get a better report this term. Meanwhile, the other girls tell Maureen that she and Gwendoline will get on really well, and Alicia gleefully introduces Gwendoline to her.
3. The girls decide to pick 'Cinderella' as their pantomime of choice. Who is tasked with writing the script?

Answer: Darrell

Moira organises a committee to decide the entertainment, consisting of herself, Alicia, Betty, Belinda, Janet, Irene, Mavis, Sally and Darrell. The girls settle on a pantomime, with 'Cinderella' being the story of choice. Darrell writes the script and discovers she has a talent for writing, while Irene is put in charge of writing the music, Janet's job is making costumes, Belinda volunteers to do artwork and Mavis, whose voice has recovered, will help with the singing. Alicia also does conjuring tricks and acrobatics.

While Moira is good at organising, she is very bossy and aggressive, and her style of running things causes tension between her and the other girls.
4. June, Alicia's cousin, is in the same form as Darrell's little sister Felicity and plays a prank in French class. What joke item does she use to scare Mam'zelle Dupont?

Answer: A set of balloons under her clothes

Darrell has been made Head of Games and is popular with the younger girls, and tells Felicity that she is good enough to get on a match team (and she's right - Felicity even scores the winning goal in a lacrosse match). June overhears and accuses Darrell of favouritism, and Darrell gives her poetry to learn as a punishment. Felicity tells Darrell that June is planning to prank Mam'zelle Dupont and asks Darrell to come and see the fun. June has a catalogue of jokes and tricks and has ordered a set of balloons that self-inflate and deflate, and make her look as though she's swelling up. Mam'zelle thinks June is about to explode and goes to get Matron, but the trick backfires when the balloons fail to deflate and Darrell has to burst them. June hides the balloons, but Mam'zelle finds them and confiscates the catalogue, as well as giving her lines.
5. While Moira is bossy, Catherine is a doormat who always insists on doing things for people, whether they want her to or not. What does Belinda call her?

Answer: Saint Catherine

Catherine is the opposite extreme of Moira. She constantly apologises, puts herself down, makes excuses for others and offers to help, but her help is not always wanted and the girls find it increasingly annoying. Irene dislikes Catherine gushing about her being a 'genius', and Catherine gets on her nerves when Irene realises she's forgotten to arrange the class flowers because she's been too busy composing a tune (although it turns out it wasn't her turn that week), and Catherine offers to do it instead. Belinda, the form artist, gets fed up with Catherine sharpening all her pencils when she deliberately keeps some of them blunt, and draws a picture of Catherine as a saint in a stained glass window, captioned 'OUR BLESSED MARTYR, SAINT CATHERINE'.

The nickname catches on and Belinda keeps drawing caricatures of Catherine, including one where she has a halo made of pencils.
6. Maureen and Gwendoline both delude themselves into thinking they're going to play Cinderella, posing in their dormitories with their hair down and and dressing up in curtains. The other girls get fed up with Maureen constantly bragging and decide to teach her a lesson. Which of these things do they NOT encourage her to do, only to make fun of her for it?

Answer: Perform acrobatics

Maureen thinks she's better than the other girls at doing various things and even tries to give them advice, but is actually completely talentless, and won't take the hint. Janet complains about her terrible sewing, while Alicia is irritated at Maureen offering to teach her to juggle and Irene complains that Maureen criticised her choice of chords in one song.

The other girls decide to teach her a lesson by giving her jobs to do, with the intention of making fun of her. A group of younger girls hear Maureen singing loudly and badly and copy her, much to Moira's annoyance.

When Maureen presents the girls with costume sketches she's done for Belinda, the girls laugh at her and ask her if she was joking. The same thing happens when Irene plays some of Maureen's compositions and Mavis gets her to sing. Sally, Bill and Mary-Lou all feel uncomfortable when Maureen starts crying and walks out.
7. The committee decide on the parts for 'Cinderella', with Moira and Betty co-producing, and Moira reads them out. Which girl gets picked for the starring role?

Answer: Mary-Lou

Although Mary-Lou is very shy, the committee think she's a good choice for Cinderella because she has big scared eyes and can look sweet and vulnerable, and she can sing. Louella, a girl from South Tower, plays the Fairy Godmother, Rachel is Buttons and Mavis is the Prince, as the role requires a lot of singing. Bill is the Baron, Pat and Rita are the Ugly Sisters, and Alicia is the Demon King. Gwendoline and Maureen are both given minor roles as servants. Sally and Darrell are not acting in the play as they will be helping with production, while Janet, Irene and Belinda are in charge of sewing costumes, music and set design respectively.
8. During half-term, Maureen's family are unable to come and visit, so Gwendoline invites her along. Does Gwendoline enjoy being with Maureen?

Answer: No

Gwendoline gloats when Maureen is upset by the other girls making fun of her, but Alicia happily points out that Gwendoline is just as bad as Maureen and they are 'two peas in a pod'. Maureen begs Gwendoline to let her spend the day with her and her mother and governess, and Gwendoline grudgingly lets Maureen tag along. Maureen sucks up to Mrs Lacey and Miss Winter, Gwendoline's governess, and Gwendoline is jealous when Miss Winter makes a fuss over Maureen.

She hopes that Maureen will say nice things about her, but all Maureen talks about is herself, and Gwendoline realises with a shock that Alicia was right. Maureen even has the same laugh as her.

She resolves to change her ways, but the girls pay little attention to her. Mrs Lacey also invites Maureen to stay over the Christmas holiday, much to Gwendoline's horror.
9. Who sends Moira the anonymous nasty notes?

Answer: June

Moira is irritable in rehearsals, constantly shouting at the girls, complaining when Alicia makes up a creepy chant for the Demon King and ordering everyone around. Bill deliberately enters from the wrong side and Louella deliberately fluffs her words just to annoy Moira. Gwendoline and Maureen are in the servants' chorus and Moira, noticing they aren't singing, orders the two of them to sing solo. Both of them are terrible and she tears strips off them, and although Darrell tries her best to keep the peace, things soon get so bad that Alicia and Betty have enough and resigns from the play. Meanwhile, Moira receives nasty anonymous notes calling her a dictator and all sorts of unpleasant things, and telling her nobody likes her.

As Moira is so unpopular, she has no idea who could have done it, though Alicia is ruled out because Alicia is too honest to write anonymous notes. Miss Potts gets involved when she finds a note in one of Moira's books, and Mam'zelle Dupont finds a note in the catalogue she confiscated from June. Miss Potts realises June did it and warns her that the matter will go to Miss Grayling, the headmistress. Because June has behaved badly all term, Miss Grayling decides to expel her. Felicity is upset and begs Darrell for help, and Moira goes to Miss Grayling to ask her to let June stay, as she knows her behaviour has been unreasonable and upset a lot of people (and in June's case, she told her off for a lack of team spirit). June is forgiven and Alicia rejoins the play out of gratitude.
10. Which joke item does Mam'zelle Dupont order from the joke catalogue she confiscated from June?

Answer: Trick teeth

Mam'zelle Dupont decides to play a trick (or 'treek', as she calls it) on the girls to cheer them up. Usually, she's the butt of the girls' jokes, but the shoe is on the other foot when she orders a set of trick teeth that give her a creepy smile. The girls and Matron get a shock when they see Mam'zelle with the teeth, and she nearly gives the game away in front of Miss Potts, but the trick backfires when Miss Grayling is showing some parents around the school and she has to conceal the teeth, making her look angry. Miss Grayling also notices that Mam'zelle's voice sounds strange. Mam'zelle momentarily forgets the teeth and smiles at the parents, giving them a shock, and when a group of Fifth Form girls see her with the teeth, she can't help but laugh.

The other girls also find it funny, and work harder out of admiration for Mam'zelle turning the tables, but Mam'zelle Rougier, the other French teacher, does not find it funny. Miss Potts also confiscates the catalogue.
