Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apart from being artistic types, what do Belinda Morris and Irene have in common?

Answer: They both forget things a lot.

While Irene is a musician, Belinda is an artist. Irene thinks she's forgotten her health certificate and is threatened with quarantine by Matron, but luckily finds it pinned to her uniform. Belinda, meanwhile, has left her health certificate in her night case, goes to look for it and takes a night case belonging to another girl by mistake. Darrell wonders how the mistresses will cope with two absent-minded girls in the class. Irene immediately likes Belinda and the two later become friends.
2. What does Gwendoline Lacey say about Daphne Turner when she introduces her to the other girls?

Answer: "I'm sure she's going to be a favourite with all of us in no time."

Daphne and Gwendoline arrive on the train, and Gwendoline takes her into the dormitory and introduces her to the girls as follows: "Hallo, everyone! This is Daphne Millicent Turner, a new girl. She's in our form and in our dormy. She travelled down in my carriage and I'm sure she's going to be a favourite with all of us in no time!"

The other girls find Gwendoline's way of introducing Daphne a bit weird, and Sally takes an immediate dislike to Daphne because she has 'too many airs and graces'. Daphne is pretty, blonde, charming and rich, and has never been to school before, and Gwendoline is sucking up to her. Sally later has to tell both girls to be quiet when they talk past lights out at bedtime.
3. Sally Hope is chosen as head girl of the form, much to Alicia Johns' annoyance. Why do the teachers decide against choosing Alicia?

Answer: She is too hard and uncaring.

While Alicia is a prankster, that isn't the reason why Sally is picked instead of her. Sally is a kind, reliable girl and good at helping girls in need, while Alicia has a cruel streak and is hard and impatient with girls who are not very bright or struggling (something Sally herself notes earlier on).

The teachers laugh at her pranks in private, but dislike the way she talks to other girls. Miss Grayling believes that while other girls might admire or envy Alicia, they won't want to be real friends with her.
4. What does Belinda like drawing in particular?

Answer: Caricatures of people

Belinda first shows off her artistic talents when she paints a picture of the sea. However, her main talent is drawing funny caricatures of people; later in the series, she collects scowls, drawing pictures of people scowling. The girls like her drawings so much that they offer to do her duties for her in return for her taking requests, much to the annoyance of the teachers, who have no idea why the girls are making such a fuss of Belinda. Even Gwendoline joins in.
5. What subject does Mary-Lou help Daphne with?

Answer: French

Daphne has trouble with French and is very good at manipulating Mam'zelle Dupont, although Mam'zelle Rougier does not fall for it. Mam'zelle Dupont offers to give her extra coaching, but Daphne manages to talk her way out of it by lying about having extra work. Mary-Lou's family had a French girl staying with them over the holidays and she has learned to speak French fluently.

She sees that Daphne is upset after Mam'zelle Rougier returns her work and offers to help her with it. This becomes a regular thing. Darrell is annoyed and wants to intervene, but Sally warns her to stay out of it.
6. Alicia is bored and Betty suggests playing a prank with some invisible chalk. In which lesson do they first use the chalk to prank a teacher?

Answer: Singing

Betty's invisible chalk is invisible when rubbed on a surface, but when the subject of the prank sits on it, it becomes warm and turns pink. Alicia and Betty test the chalk themselves to see what it looks like, and then decide to prank Mr Young, the singing teacher. Miss Potts notices both girls are distracted in prep and warns Miss Parker to watch out for pranks.

Betty goes to the singing room to get it ready for the class and puts chalk on the piano stool. When Mr Young sits on the piano stool, he gets chalk on his coat, much to the amusement of the girls. Miss Grayling notices it and sends Sally to get a brush to clean it off. Mr Lemming, a piano tuner, also gets some on his clothes when he sits on the stool to check the piano keys.
7. Darrell decides to have a go at playing pranks with the chalk, and targets Mam'zelle Dupont. What word does she write backwards on the chair with the chalk?

Answer: OY

Darrell writes 'YO' on Mam'zelle's chair so that it will spell 'OY' on her skirt when she gets up. The girls are unsure how to react and Alicia tells Darrell off for being an idiot, as the other mistresses might see it. Mam'zelle leaves before Darrell can tell her and is annoyed when the first formers laugh at her whenever she turns around. The first formers figure out that the second form must have pranked Mam'zelle and one girl, Hilda, brushes off her skirt so the second formers won't get into trouble.

Darrell gets praised by other girls for the prank, but Alicia and Betty are angry because Betty was the one who brought the chalk in, and Darrell could have gotten the form in trouble. They retaliate by making nasty comments about Sally in front of Darrell to try and make her lose her temper.
8. Ellen is constantly in a bad mood because she is worried about her work, and snaps at the other girls. Which girl makes an effort to befriend her?

Answer: Jean

Most of the girls dislike Ellen because she is always in a bad mood, and snaps at them for disrupting her reading or walking too near her. Sally tries to talk to her, but Ellen brushes her off, and Sally is puzzled as Ellen is at Malory Towers on a scholarship, but is low down in the form league table. Jean usually sits next to Ellen and has the bed next to hers, so Sally asks her to talk to Ellen. Jean knows Ellen is worried about something and rather than tackling her head-on, does little things for her like helping her dry her hair or hunt for her gym shoes.

It works and Ellen begins to thaw out towards Jean, though she is still rude to the other girls (except Mary-Lou).
9. Why does Daphne ask Mam'zelle Dupont to give her extra French coaching?

Answer: She wants to get out of a walk.

Although the weather has been bad, the teachers decide the girls must have their walk. Gwendoline tries to get out of it by sniffing and implying she has a cold, but nobody is buying it. Daphne manipulates Mam'zelle Dupont into getting her excused from the walk by asking her to give her extra French coaching. Miss Parker knows that Daphne is blatantly trying to get out of the walk, but Mam'zelle insists on coaching her anyway. However, the walk is called off because of a gale, and Miss Parker makes up for it by organising a games session in the gym and asking Matron to make cakes as a treat.

Mary-Lou offers to get Daphne, but Miss Parker makes a point of telling her not to, as Daphne clearly wants to study. Meanwhile, Daphne spends the afternoon with Mam'zelle Dupont and is bored rigid. Mam'zelle has not heard the girls come back, so she sends Daphne to see if they have come back yet and Daphne discovers the girls have been having fun in the gym. Alicia mocks her, saying the didn't want to interrupt her French lesson. Daphne angrily asks why Gwendoline didn't tell her and Sally mentions that Mary-Lou wanted to get Daphne. Daphne warms up to Mary-Lou and genuinely starts liking her as a friend.
10. The two Mam'zelles argue over which girls to cast in some French plays, as Mam'zelle Dupont wants Daphne, while Mam'zelle Rougier wants Darrell or Sally. Which girl plays a prank because of the feud, which backfires horribly?

Answer: Belinda

Mam'zelle Dupont wants to cast Daphne as the heroine in both plays because of her looks, but Mam'zelle Rougier wants Sally or Darrell because their French is better. The two Mam'zelles fall out over it and keep swapping the parts around. Belinda draws a series of caricatures of Mam'zelle Rougier trying to murder Mam'zelle Dupont, and Alicia suggests she leaves them on the teacher's desk when they have French, because Mam'zelle Dupont will find them funny. What Alicia knows, and Belinda doesn't, is that they have Mam'zelle Rougier instead. Mam'zelle Rougier sees the pictures and is angry, and goes to Miss Grayling.

Alicia admits she knew Mam'zelle Rougier was taking them for French, not Mam'zelle Dupont. Sally takes Belinda to Miss Grayling to confess. Miss Linnie, the art teacher, sees the pictures and realises Belinda did them. Sally and Belinda see Miss Grayling and Belinda confesses about the prank, and Mam'zelle ends up telling Miss Grayling about the argument over the plays. Mam'zelle Dupont sees the pictures, but luckily sees the funny side, and she and Mam'zelle Rougier decide not to punish the girls as they are ultimately to blame. Mam'zelle casts Darrell and Sally as the heroines in the plays instead of Daphne, as a favour to Mam'zelle Rougier.
11. Ellen becomes ill with a nasty cold and has to go to the sick bay to recover. She panics because she is worried about being behind in her work, and decides she is going to cheat in the upcoming tests. She sneaks into Mam'zelle's room when she finds out the papers are in there, but what happens next?

Answer: Darrell catches her with the papers.

Ellen spends two weeks in the sick bay. Jean goes to visit Ellen in the sick bay and Ellen begs her to give her the notes from various classes, but Matron warns Ellen that she needs to take it easy and stop thinking about work. The teachers also refuse to give her extra work as they feel she is not up to it. Ellen sneaks into Miss Potts' room and Miss Parker's room to look for the test papers, and is caught by other girls each time. She overhears the teachers talking about the papers and sneaks out to Mam'zelle's room but Darrell, who has noticed that Ellen is out of bed, goes looking for her and finds her hiding in a cupboard.

Darrell notices Ellen is hiding something in her pocket and tries to grab her hand, but Ellen pushes her away and Darrell lashes out at her. They fight and Darrell finds the papers, and threatens to tell Sally.
12. Ellen gets a stress headache and has to go back into the sick bay. The girls speculate that she might have been expelled, but not for looking at the test papers. What does Alicia accuse Ellen of doing?

Answer: Stealing

The girls' things have been going missing; Emily has lost a gold brooch, and Daphne and Gwendoline have money missing from their purses. Because of Ellen's suspicious behaviour and sneaking about looking in desks, Alicia thinks she is the thief and publicly accuses her, despite Sally telling her not to as they have no definite proof. Ellen insists she didn't take the girls' things, but Alicia doesn't believe her.

Ellen has a severe headache caused by the stress of the past few days and has go to Matron. The teachers talk about sending her home because she is ill, but Katie, a first former, assumes she is being expelled and tells the second formers. Miss Grayling tells Ellen that she needs to go home when she is well enough and Ellen assumes she is going to be expelled for looking at the papers. Daphne is unusually concerned about the possibility of Ellen being expelled.
13. Daphne mentions to Mary-Lou that she needs string for a parcel that has to be posted urgently. She forgets about the parcel, but Mary-Lou offers to post it for her, despite the terrible weather. While Mary-Lou is out in a storm, she is nearly blown off a cliff. Who comes to save her?

Answer: Daphne

Gwendoline tries to put Mary-Lou off posting the parcel by telling her that Daphne isn't really her friend, and is only using her to help with her French homework, but Mary-Lou insists on doing it anyway. The girls notice Mary-Lou is missing at dinner and Sally cannot find her, but Gwendoline gets Daphne alone and tells her that Mary-Lou has gone to post the parcel. Daphne is frightened that Mary-Lou is in danger and goes to look for her, and finds her clinging onto some grass on the edge of a cliff. She ties the belts of her mackintosh and her tunic together and wraps her legs around a gorse bush, while Mary-Lou holds onto the makeshift rope.

Meanwhile, Gwendoline tells the teachers that Daphne has gone after Mary-Lou and a search party is sent out. Both girls are rescued, taken back to school and sent to the sick bay. Miss Parker tells the girls in the second form dormitory what has happened, and the girls praise Daphne for her heroic deed.
14. Darrell, Sally, Irene and Belinda go out to find the parcel the following day. What was in the parcel?

Answer: Stolen things belonging to the girls

The girls look for the parcel and Darrell spots it in the grass. They find that the paper is soggy and falling apart and decide to take the contents with them, and discover that the parcel is full of jewellery boxes and empty purses belonging to the other girls. One of the jewellery boxes contains Emily's missing brooch. The girls take the stolen items to Miss Grayling, and Sally admits that the girls thought Ellen stole them and that she had been expelled for stealing. Miss Grayling tells them that Ellen is ill and in the sick bay, and the girls have to come clean about accusing Ellen of stealing their things. Darrell gets Miss Grayling alone and tells her about the incident with the test papers, and apologises for losing her temper.

Miss Grayling calls the other girls in and confirms that Ellen is not the thief. What she knows, and the girls do not, is that Daphne is the thief, as Daphne has been expelled from two schools for stealing. She later sends for Daphne and shows her the stolen things, and tells her that she wanted to give Daphne a second chance despite her bad reputation. Daphne saving Mary-Lou's life shows that she has some good in her. However, she has lied to the girls about being wealthy, and when she heard that Ellen had been accused of stealing, she parcelled up the things she stole and was going to send them to a fake address, as she was worried about her fingerprints being on them.
15. True or false: Daphne is expelled from Malory Towers.

Answer: False

Miss Grayling decides that Daphne deserves a second chance, and that her act of heroism in saving Mary-Lou's life has shown that there is some good in her after all. However, she tells Daphne that she needs to confess to the other girls that she was the thief, especially after all the distress the false accusations have caused Ellen. Daphne meets her classmates in the common room and tells them the truth about her, and how she had been lying about her glamorous life. Loyal as ever, Mary-Lou declares that she'll stick by Daphne and give her another chance.

The other girls agree one by one, including Alicia, who is ashamed of her cruel behaviour towards Ellen. Gwendoline is angry with Daphne, but peer pressure makes her agree with the rest. Daphne then stays on at Malory Towers.
