Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the mermaid the first Mathew Trewhella swam away with?

Answer: Morveren

Dad knew a lot about the Mer. He knew that they would have died in the air, and that the Mer did not have kings. He says this in the first chapter, when Sapphy and Dad are inside Zennor Church, gazing at the Zennor mermaid.
2. What song begins with "I wish I was away in Ingo, Far across the briny sea, Sailing over deepest waters"?

Answer: O Peggy Gordon

The name Ingo meant a lot to Sapphy when Dad disappeared. She believes that Dad is in Ingo, and is NOT dead as most people believe. Only she, Conor and Granny Carne know that Mathew Trewhella is still alive.
3. Mum's name is Mary.

Answer: False

Mum's name is Jennie. She is scared of the sea, which means that she will never go near it. She must have been completely terrified when she searched for Dad down the cove. Dad, Conor and Sapphy love the sea, and Roger, Mum's diver 'friend' loves it too.
4. "My hands trail in the water" is what Sapphy says. This causes what disaster?

Answer: Her watch breaks

She loves her watch, because Dad got it for her in Truro. She goes to the sea because she is searching for Conor. He is chatting to a girl on a rock, who seems to be wearing a wetsuit. Sapphy doesn't know what significance this has, until further on in the book...
5. When Sapphy is describing climbing down through the mist, what simile does she use?

Answer: It is like trying to do your best handwriting with your fingers in thick gloves

This is when Sapphy meets Faro. Conor has already been in Ingo with his Mer friend - Elvira - Faro's sister. They both have to hold their friend's wrists - and they feel a searing pain when they are going through the skin of the water.
6. What does Faro say about Sapphy's legs?

Answer: They are cleft

He says that it must be strange to be divided, at which Sapphy takes offence, but her legs look different next to Faro's powerful curved tail. Sapphy says that HE is strange, because he is half-half, but Faro says he is not HALF anything - he is wholly Mer.
7. When Sapphy and Conor are talking about the different times, eg Earth Time, Ingo Time, Human Time, what does Sapphy NOT suggest?

Answer: Space time

They talk about different types of time when they go into Ingo for what seems like minutes, but they are gone actual hours. They think that there are all kinds of time, but usually you only experience one. The example they use is how the oak tree lives for thousands of years, as we only live much less than that.
8. What is the name of the dog that Sapphy would love to own?

Answer: Sadie

Roger tries to convince Mum that Sapphy could have her, which Sapphy loves. She really adores that dog. Mum thinks that if Sapphy had a dog to look after, she wouldn't be running off down to the cove all the time.
9. When Gray and Roger are trying to dive by the Bawns, Sapphy and Conor rush to save them, because they know that it is not safe. The two children dive down into the water, and Sapphy calls Faro. He shows them something, and Conor hears strange, beautiful music. What is this place?

Answer: Limina

This is where Mer come to die. The seals sing the song that is very rare to hear, even for Mer. Conor says it's full of patterns, sweet, and like the sound you get when you hold a shell up to your ear.
10. Dad calls to Sapphy at the end of the book.

Answer: True

The light changes greenish blue, like the colour of underwater, like Ingo. A voice comes that Sapphy can hear - "Myrgh kerenza" - which means "dear daughter". Now Sapphy definitely knows that her Dad is out there somewhere, and that she will find him.
