Alice is a young witch who is the niece of a powerful witch. The Spook tells Tom not to get too close with her because she is a witch, but she saves his life. Tom and Alice become good friends and she saves his life on numerous occasions. She is supposedly different from other witches but the Spook still has serious doubts about her.

The Spook's name is John Gregory. He was once a church minister but when he left, his brother became a minister, Father Gregory. Andrew Gregory is the Spook's other brother. He is a locksmith who gives the Spook a special key that opens any door. Father Gregory is rather hostile to the Spook because of his profession (clergy hate Spooks) while Andrew is open to his brother.

The Bloodeye is an evil water witch that lives in the northern part of the county. The Bloodeye is one of the daughters of the Fiends and her real name is Morwena. She can stun a person with one eye, the Bloodye. Morwena has been terrorizing the county for centuries until Tom and his new master (for only this book) kill it.

This is a true fact that Tom himself starts to find out. She is the Lamia witch from Greece. She is a good witch, though. In Book 3, she goes back to her homeland of Greece to fight the dark. She has faith in Tom and trust in Alice.

Some apprentices have failed ,such as Morgan who turned evil, some have died such as Bill Bradley who died because of a boggart, and very few have succeeded such as Bill Arkwright who because a spook for the northern part of the county.
