Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are two hoops at either end of a paved area outside and I've got a round ball. What sport am I about to play?

Answer: basketball

In order to play basketball a person would need at least one hoop, a somewhat smooth playing surface and an actual basketball.

There are many ways to play, including one-on-one and in teams of up to five on each side.

Standard size basketballs are about 9.5 inches in diameter.
2. I've got a small yellow ball, a net and several rackets. What sport am I about to play?

Answer: tennis

Equipment needed to play tennis includes at least two rackets, a tennis ball and a net to stretch across the playing surface.

A standard tennis ball is about 2.5 inches in diameter.
3. This sport can be done bare handed or with a pole, and involves wild animals. What sport am I about to participate in?

Answer: fishing

While traditionally fishermen use poles with lures or bait, there are several varieties of fishing done with bare hands.

Some types of barehanded fishing are referred to as "noodling."

There are dozens of ways to fish, and not always for sport. Some fishing is done to gather food, and other fishing is done simple as a means to relax.

In competitive fishing, a catch and release method is often used.
4. I'm sitting on a "souped up" ride-on lawnmower and getting ready to go to a moto cross race. Will they let me compete?

Answer: No

Moto cross was invented in the early 20th century when people in the U.K. held motorcycle trials.

Eventually the trials became more and more difficult, and the motorcycles used got more and more specialized. Lawnmowers are not allowed!

The sport is generally contested on off-road, closed courses.
5. There is a giant yellow U-shaped goalpost in the park, so I'm grabbing my small black and white checkered ball and heading over to play soccer. Can I do that with just those two things?

Answer: No

The yellow goal post is for an American football (gridiron) field, not soccer. The ball needed for gridiron is more of an oval shape and, generally speaking, brown.

Soccer fields have smaller goals which are guarded by a goalie.
6. I've got my headgear, special shoes and an uniform called a singlet. What sport am I headed off to compete in?

Answer: wrestling

Wrestling is a sport that requires very little equipment. Even the singlet isn't required except during sanctioned competition.

One of the oldest sports known to man, other than running, it is the only sport in recorded history to be competed in by every culture on record.
7. Strapping on ice skates, grabbing a small rubber disc and a stick, what sport will I be playing shortly?

Answer: ice hockey

Ice hockey is another sport that doesn't require a lot of equipment. Skates, a puck and a stick are all that is required for a pick up game. A net, some protective gear and other players are all that is needed for a full game.
8. I'm grabbing a small round ball, a bat and a glove. This is all I need to play what sport?

Answer: baseball

Baseball is known as "America's pasttime."

A standard game has at least 9 players on each team, but pickup games often have fewer.

Some pickup games don't even use actual bases, instead just whatever might be lying around.

A glove, ball and bat are the only things required to play.
9. For this sport, all I need is an opponent, though most of time both competitors will wear gloves as well. What sport am I about to participate in?

Answer: boxing

All anyone needs to compete as a boxer is an opponent.

In most modern boxing associations competitors are required to wear protective gloves and a mouth guard.

Bare knuckle boxing rings still exist in many places as well.
10. For this sport, I'm grabbing a lance, and climbing on a horse. What am I about to do?

Answer: joust

The joust, or jousting, came about in the middle ages.

The sport pits two horseman each with a blunted lance riding toward each other in an attempt to unseat the other.

Both competitors are generally wearing heavy armor when they compete.
