Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the New Testament scriptures of Matthew 17:1, Mark 9:2, and Luke 9:28, we read of the visually changing image of Christ as seen by three of His disciples, James, Peter and John. Often referred to as "the transfiguration", how did these disciples perceive Jesus to appear before their eyes?

Answer: His face shone as the sun and his clothing shone like a white light.

According to the scriptures mentioned, Jesus appeared in a different form than what the disciples were accustomed to. He shone; both his face and his clothing, with what must have been a bright white light. During this time both Moses and Elijah, Old Testament figures, were seen in conversation with him. I have often wondered just what that conversation would have consisted of. I rather imagine that they were possibly giving him encouragement to face the ordeal of crucifixion that lay in store ahead of him, but that is mere conjecture on my part, as scripture does not tell us what they discussed.

The disciples were understandably in awe, with Peter even venturing an impetuous suggestion. He blurted out that a tabernacle should be built for each of the three of the figures before him, but that suggestion would have reduced Christ's importance by comparing him with the other two men, who were mere mortals. God intervened verbally at that point, and speaking from the cloud that hovered over the scene - "This is my beloved Son: hear him."

2. After His transfiguration on the mountain, Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum. Peter was approached by tax collectors who asked him for the temple tax that was required of all citizens. Jesus told Peter where to go to find enough money to pay the tax for both of them. Where did Peter find the money?

Answer: In a fish's mouth

Jesus told Peter not to offend the tax collectors by not paying. He sent Peter to the sea and told him to put his hook into the water and to open the mouth of the first fish he caught. When Peter did as he was told, he found a shekel inside the fish's mouth. (A shekel was worth four drachma, and since the tax was two drachma per person, Peter had exactly the amount needed for two taxes.)

The story of the temple tax can be found in Matthew 17, verses 24-27. This miracle is another story of how true faith will take care of all of our needs. I can't help but wonder if Peter thought it odd that Jesus told him to look inside a fish's mouth, yet he followed instructions without question and found exactly what he needed.

3. We are all familiar with the miracle of Jesus walking on the sea in John 6 ... but there was a second miracle in this story, one that is mostly overlooked. What was it?

Answer: The moment Jesus entered the ship it was immediately at the land they were going to.

In John 6:19 we read that the disciples had rowed out about twenty five or thirty furlongs, so they were quite some distance from the shore when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and then in verse 21 we read that the "disciples willingly received Jesus into the ship and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went"
Mathew 8 also tells of another incident where Jesus did in fact still the wind and the sea by speaking to them. He did not walk on the water at this time and Matthew 14 tells of an incident where Peter also walked on the water to meet Jesus, but this account does not mention the miraculous removal of the ship to shore.

4. In the story where Simon Peter cuts off a man's ear when Jesus is to be arrested (Luke 22:49-51), what does Jesus do when the man's ear is cut off?

Answer: Heals the man

When Jesus was praying in Gethsemane, before his arrest, suddenly Judas and some others came to arrest him. Judas came and kissed Jesus to show the others which one Jesus was. One of Jesus' men, sensing the danger, cut the ear off one of Judas' men. Jesus said "Permit even this." Then Jesus healed the man's ear. (Luke 22: 47-51).

5. After Jesus' crucifixion and death what happened that astounded his disciples?

Answer: He rose from the dead.

Even though Jesus had told his disciples he would rise from the dead they struggled to believe he had actually risen.

"When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.

Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen." Mark 16:9-14 New International Version

6. In Matthew 9:27-31, we read of two blind men whom Jesus healed. In what manner did he enable them to receive their sight?

Answer: By touching their eyes and telling them that faith would heal them.

In the 9th chapter of Matthew, we see that the two blind men were healed by
a) Jesus touching them
b) and by their own faith.
Read the following excerpt from the King James Bible:

27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

7. Perhaps one of the most touching stories of faith is that of the woman who had spent twelve years (and by Mark's account, all of her money) seeking a cure for her illness. What did she do that finally brought about the miraculous cure?

Answer: She touched Jesus's cloak.

There are three accounts of the bleeding woman in the Gospels. All three document her strong faith and belief that she would be cured merely by touching Jesus's clothing. When Jesus asked who in the crowd had touched him, she came forward and He told her that her faith had healed her and that she could go in peace.

The passages are found in Luke 8, Mark 5 and Matthew 9.

8. In Luke 7:11-17 KJV, when Jesus goes to Nain what miracle does he do for a young man?

Answer: He brings the man back from the dead.

Jesus went to the city of Nain with his disciples. When he got there he saw a dead man being carried out of the city followed by his weeping mother who was a widow. Jesus went to the woman and told her not to cry. Then he touched the corpse and the man suddenly sat up and came to life! People then thought that Jesus was a prophet and this story went all around Judea.

9. In Matthew 8, a centurion comes to Jesus asking Jesus to heal his servant, whom is lying sick at home. Jesus tells the centurion to go home and his servant would be healed for what reason?

Answer: The centurion's faith in God.

A centurion was a man who captained 100 soldiers in the Roman army. When the centurion came to talk to Jesus, he explained that he did not need Jesus to come to his home, he believed that just by Jesus' words, Jesus could heal the servant. This story can be found in Matthew 8:5-13.

10. In Matthew 9:27-31 is the story of the two blind men from Galilee. Jesus touches their eyes and they are able to see. Jesus gives them a command. What was the command and did they obey it?

Answer: See that no man know it; no they did not obey.

It said in the Bible that the men went out and told everyone despite the fact Jesus told them not to. They were healed because of their great faith that Jesus could easily make them see.
