Because of the government's count of people, everyone had to return to the town where they grew up. There were people everywhere when Joseph and Mary got to Bethlehem. They tried to find a room in the hotel, but there was no place for them to stay. Instead they found a stable, which was a barn where animals were kept. (Luke 2)

In the same area where Jesus was born, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. They were scared to pieces when an angel of the Lord appeared! They said "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly there was with the angel many other angels praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" (Luke 2:8-20)

The night Jesus was born, God placed a star in the sky that wise men who lived very far away saw. They knew this was a sign that a king had been born. They got gold, perfume, and ointment to give to the new king and made a very long journey. God let the star shine until they found Jesus.

They were overjoyed and gave praise to God! They presented the gifts to Jesus and his parents who were amazed. (Matthew 2:9-10)

Jesus' parents brought him to the temple, as was the Jewish custom eight days after a child had been born. Simeon was there and when he saw Jesus he praised God and cried. Simeon told God, "Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the sight of all nations. He will bring hope to the Gentiles and glory to all your people in Israel." Jesus' parents were amazed and gave thanks to God also because of the words Simeon had said.

Anna was over eighty years old, and told God's people His word. She was in the temple the day Jesus' parents brought him in. She praised God and told all the people there that Jesus would give them the hope that they were looking for. (Luke 2:36-38)

Answer: King Herod

King Herod had told people seeking Jesus that when they found Jesus, they needed to tell him so he could worship Jesus himself. However Herod secretly wanted to kill Jesus. When he found out that the people he had told did not tell him where Jesus was, Herod was extremely angry! He ordered all the babies two years old and under to be killed, but God protected Jesus and his family. (Matthew 2:13-15)

Answer: Egypt

An angel told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt until it was safe. When the evil king died, God told them they could return to their home in Israel. (Matthew 2:13-15).

Answer: Romans

Romans were very cruel and Israel had once been a country that had freedom to do as they pleased. Prophets had said a Messiah would come who would be a grand ruler and a prince of peace. Many people did not recognize Jesus when he was born because they were expecting a king and not a baby. (Isaiah 9:6)
