Answer: "Crucify him!"

When Jesus first came through the city, the people sang praise to God and blessed him! They treated him like a king. They shouted "Hosanna", "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!", and "Hosanna to the Son of David!". They cut off the leaves of palm trees and waved them in celebration. People also laid their coats down in front of Jesus so the donkey would have a place to walk. (Matthew 21:1-11)

Answer: the religious leaders

The religious leaders should have been the ones who were the happiest to see Jesus, but they were not. Jesus told them they deceived the people and many did wicked things. They were angered and secretly tried to plan a way to kill him. However Jesus was in town during the Passover, a very important holiday. "Let's kill him afterwards!," they said. "If we do it now it could cause trouble or a riot!". (Matthew 26:3-5)

Answer: The Last Supper

Jesus and his disciples met to celebrate the Passover, but his last meeting with them is known as the "Last Supper". Jesus ate bread, washed their feet, and even sang songs with them. Then he told his disciples that he would be killed in a few hours by one of them.

His disciples could not believe it! They were shocked! However Jesus told them that some of them would deny him that very night. After the supper, they all went to the garden to pray. (Mark 14)

Answer: Judas

Judas knew Jewish leaders wanted to kill Jesus. He left the meeting Jesus was having with his disciples and went to the chief priest. He told the chief priest and the temple leaders where Jesus was so they could arrest him. Judas led them to Jesus and gave Jesus a kiss to tell them he was the man they wanted. Jesus' enemies paid Judas thirty pieces of silver for betraying his friend. (Luke 22)

Answer: Peter

Peter loved Jesus and tried to be very brave. When soldiers came to arrest Jesus, Peter took out his sword and cut one of the servants' ears off. Jesus picked up the ear and healed the man. After that Jesus told Peter to put his sword away. Jesus went peacefully with the men who came to arrest him. (John 18:10)

Answer: "I find no fault in this man."

Pontius Pilate did not want to crucify Jesus. He even offered to set Jesus free and crucify another man named Barabbas, who was a very evil criminal. However the Jewish leaders made such a fuss that they wanted to kill Jesus, he told them they could. He washed his hands and told them he was innocent of killing Jesus.

The Jews took Jesus to be crucified, which was a very painful death. (John 18)

Answer: Isaiah

Jesus was beaten and was wounded. He went through many painful things that cut his skin and hurt him. They put nails in his feet and a crown of thorns on his head.

However the prophet Isaiah had prophesied that this would happen. Isaiah had written, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)

Answer: "This is the King of the Jews"

A crown of thorns was placed on Jesus' head and he was placed on the cross for all to see. Pilate ordered that a sign be placed on Jesus' cross that said, "This is the King of the Jews." Some of the Jews were very upset because they didn't want others to believe Jesus was a king. The Jews told him to change it, but Pilate said no. (John 19:19-22)

Answer: "Today you will be in Paradise with me."

Jesus had done nothing wrong to be killed on the cross. The other two men had done very terrible things. One of the men made fun of Jesus and told him to save himself. However the other thief knew Jesus was innocent. He asked Jesus to remember him when he came to his kingdom. Jesus told the thief that that very day they would both be in paradise. (Luke 24:43)

Answer: "Surely this man was the Son of God."

The Roman soldiers and Jews had stood at the bottom of the cross and made fun of Jesus while he was dying. Jesus suffered a very painful death hanging there. However when he died he forgave them for the way they had treated them. He turned his head towards heaven and said, "It is finished!".

The sky turned black and there was a giant earthquake. It split the rocks in half that were near the cross. The soldiers who were at the cross said, "Surely this man was the Son of God." (Mark 15:39)
