Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In total, how many children are staying at the Witchens?

Answer: 10

There are ten children altogether. In detail, they are: Len, Con, Margot and Stephen Maynard, Gerard and Louis von Ahlen, Wolferl and Josefa von und zu Wertheim, Tessa de Bersac and Sybil Russell. Sybil is the oldest of the children and helps look after the younger ones, and is also there to give Madge a break as she is pregnant. With the exception of Jack Maynard, who is working at the Sanatorium, the Quartette's husbands are away at war.
2. Why is Zephyr Burthill so desperate to have Phoebe's father's cello?

Answer: She thinks learning on it will make her a better musician.

Phoebe's late father, Nicholas Wychcote, was a professional cellist. He fell out with Mrs Hart, the local vicar's wife, after he refused to play a concert for her for free. Zephyr Burthill, a rich girl, and her father both write to Phoebe, pressurising her into selling the cello so that Zephyr can learn on it, as she was a huge fan of Nicholas Wychcote's playing. Debby, Phoebe's housekeeper, thinks Phoebe should sell it as they need the money, but Phoebe does not want to get rid of it as her father left it to her. On meeting Joey and getting to know her and her friends, Phoebe thinks that Joey may be able to help with the situation and asks for her advice. Joey reads Zephyr's letter and is disgusted at how spoiled she is.
3. Joey writes to Mr Burthill's agent, but Zephyr reads the letter and comes to visit her in person. When she initially meets Joey, who does she mistake her for?

Answer: A servant

Zephyr sees Joey sitting on top of the gate at the Witchens and asks if Mrs Maynard is staying there. When Joey says that she is, Zephyr assumes she must be some kind of servant and that Mrs Maynard is her mistress, and asks Joey to tell her mistress that she wishes to see her. Joey explains that she is in fact Mrs Maynard, and when Zephyr tells her chauffeur to stay in the car, Joey overrides her and invites him to go and sit on a bench in the shade while they talk. Zephyr tries to get Phoebe's address out of Joey, but Joey refuses and Zephyr threatens to find out where Phoebe lives.
4. Although Phoebe is unable to play the cello due to her chronic pain, she does have another talent, which she uses to earn money. What type of work does she do?

Answer: Embroidery

Phoebe took up sewing and embroidery as a hobby to keep her occupied, with her father's encouragement, and embroiders cushions, handkerchiefs, baby clothes, tablecloths and all kinds of other things. Because of her chronic pain, she is sometimes unable to fulfil requests, such as a request to embroider napkins and a teacloth for an upcoming wedding.

The goods arrive late and the bride sends them back. The Quartette are all impressed at Phoebe's work, and Joey even asks her to embroider some clothes for Madge Russell's upcoming baby.
5. Stephen is teething and wakes Joey up late at night. Just before she goes back to bed, she hears Rufus growling and sees a strange man walking away from the gate and getting into car. She goes out to investigate. What does she find on the lawn?

Answer: A lump of poisoned meat

Jack and Dr Peters come to take Phoebe to the Sanatorium for treatment, and Jack is supposed to be taking the cello as well and dropping it off at the Round House, but he forgets. Reg Entwistle, a local boy who is friends with Phoebe, is upset that Phoebe went without anyone telling him and Joey explains the situation, and asks him to keep an eye out for strangers. During the night, Joey sees a large dark object on the grass after the strange man has gone, and picks it up.

She discovers that it is a piece of meat and immediately realises that someone was trying to poison Rufus.

She - correctly, as it happens - suspects Mr Burthill of being behind this (although he had only intended to make Rufus ill, not kill him). She takes the meat to a local vet and he insists on informing the police, although he ends up becoming distracted by other cases.
6. Joey has another restless night when two men come to the house, and Jem follows them. Joey goes downstairs to get a cup of tea and runs into the men. What does she throw at them?

Answer: A frying pan with bacon in it

The frying pan also has a plate on top of it to keep flies away from the bacon, and it hits one of the men in the face and breaks his teeth. The local policeman hears the commotion and he and Jem capture the men and lock them in a shed, while Marie slips on some bacon and gives herself a black eye. Joey insists that Mr Burthill is behind the attempted burglary, but Jem warns her not to go to the police about him without proof.

He wants the Quartette and their families to come home with him, but Joey refuses and asks him to take the cello to the Sanatorium.
7. Joey visits Phoebe, along with Reg, and Phoebe tells her about Reg's background, and that he is bright and ambitious and wants to go to grammar school. However, there's one problem - his aunt. Why does Reg's aunt not want to pay for his education?

Answer: She doesn't want him getting ideas above his station.

Reg's father was a middle-class doctor who married a working-class woman. His aunt, Mrs Thirtle, is his sole carer as both his parents are dead, and can afford to pay for him to go to the local grammar school, but is unwilling to pay the fees as she doesn't want him getting above his station and 'has no use for education'. Reg, however, does not want to leave school and wants to go to university. Jack befriends Reg and takes him on a tour of the Sanatorium, and gives Reg a pep talk when Reg realises he wants to be a doctor. Jack later offers to pay for Reg's education, but as Garnley Grammar is full, he goes to Dr Peters' old school instead as a boarder.
8. Mrs Hart pays a call on the Witchens to meet the Quartette and their families, as she hasn't seen any of them at the local church services. Joey already dislikes Mrs Hart because she agrees with Mr Burthill that Phoebe should give up her father's cello, but what else does Mrs Hart do that really annoys Joey?

Answer: She compliments Sybil's looks.

Mrs Hart finds out from the local butcher that there are people staying at the Witchens, and that none of them except Sybil attend the local church (as Sybil is the only Protestant in the group). Joey is already aware of Mrs Hart's falling out with Nicholas Wychcote and when she mentions him, Mrs Hart claims that Phoebe is being a 'dog in the manger' about the cello and that Zephyr needs it more than her. (Zephyr later returns to beg for the cello, only for Joey to give her a telling off.) When the Quartette introduce their children to Mrs Hart, Mrs Hart gushes about Sybil's looks and Sybil is embarrassed. Joey has previously warned Debby not to compliment Sybil's looks as she has a complex about it, and she quickly changes the subject. Mrs Hart is also shocked to learn that the Quartette and their children attend St Ignatius', a Catholic church.

When Mrs Hart leaves, Joey expresses her disgust.
9. True or false: Phoebe gets engaged to Dr Peters at the end of the book.

Answer: True

Dr Peters is Phoebe's specialist and has an interest in rheumatology as his mother also suffered from chronic pain and died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis. Jack tells the Quartette that Dr Peters has fallen in love with Phoebe, but isn't sure if she feels the same way, and he asks them to talk to her. Joey and Simone go to the Sanatorium to visit and Joey makes a comment about how ugly Dr Peters is, and Phoebe responds by talking about how much she loves his smile and how gentle his hands are.

When Dr Peters comes in, Joey takes him aside and wishes him luck. Phoebe later writes to Joey informing her that she and Dr Peters are engaged, and asks if they can be married from the Maynards' house.
10. Madge gives birth to her fourth child at the end of the book. What does Joey complain about when Jack tells her the news?

Answer: The baby is a girl, and Joey was hoping for a boy.

Throughout the book, Joey assumes that Madge is going to have a son and hopes that she will, as she already has two daughters. Jack phones up with the news that Madge has given birth to a third daughter, much to Joey's dismay. Joey worries that Sybil will be jealous, but Sybil is overjoyed and can't wait to meet her new sister. Madge and Jem decide to call her Aline Elizabeth (she later becomes Ailie for short), after Elizabeth Ozanne, and Joey gives Madge some baby clothes made by Phoebe. Zephyr also comes to apologise to Phoebe about the cello; she and Robin Humphries are now friends, as Joey thinks Robin will be a good influence and encourages Zephyr to meet her.
