Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following organs is not used during digestion?

Answer: Lungs

Lungs are part of the respiratory system. They help our body to take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The stomach secretes gastric juice and the liver secretes bile.
2. What is the first step in the digestion process?

Answer: Ingestion

Ingestion is the process of intaking of food from the mouth. Digestion is the process of digesting the food, where the complex food gets broken down into simpler molecules. Absorption is the process of absorbing nutrients from the digested food.
3. Whenever you chew food, what is squirted in your mouth?

Answer: Saliva

Whenever we chew something then the saliva from our salivary glands is secreted in our mouth. Its function is to make the chewed food soft for the easy passage through the food pipe to the stomach. Saliva also has some digestive enzymes that starts to break down the carbohydrates in food into simple sugars. That's why we feel sweetness in our mouth when we chew a piece of bread for a longer time as the carbohydrates present in the bread get broken down into sugars by the enzymes present in the saliva.
4. After chewing, the food is swallowed and passes down the ____________ to the _____________.

Answer: oesophagus, stomach

When we swallow food, it goes down the oesophagus (or food pipe) to the stomach. The oesophagus is a pipe-like structure that connects the mouth to the stomach. The stomach is a bag-like structure where some of the digestion of food takes place.
5. The stomach is about 8 inches long and is a sac that is shaped like the letter "J". What is food mixed with when in the stomach?

Answer: Gastric fluid

When food reaches the stomach, it mixes with gastric fluid. Gastric fluid helps in the digestion of food. Also digestive juices from other glands such as liver and pancreas is also secreted.
6. Where is the final place for the food digestion process?

Answer: Small Intestine

In the small intestine the final digestion process takes place. Here, the digestive juices from all the glands get mixed and finally the food is digested. The small intestine has villi that take most of the nutrients from the digested food and transport them to the blood. Villi are finger-like structures that are present on the inner surface of the intestine.
7. What do the waste products and food that is not absorbed previously in the digestive process pass into?

Answer: Large intestine

The undigested food from the small intestine is passed to the large intestine. The large intestine has larger numbers of villi that absorbs the remaining nutrients and water from the food. The large intestine is shorter than the small intestine but is wider than small intestine, hence its name.
8. Which mineral acid is present in our stomach?

Answer: Hydrochloric acid

Gastric fluid is secreted by the walls of the stomach. This fluid contains hydrochloric acid. This is a strong acid that helps in the digestion of the food. It provides an acidic medium for the digestion of the food. It also kills the harmful bacteria present in the food.
9. What is the largest gland in the body? (Hint: it secretes bile.)

Answer: Liver

Liver is the largest of all glands present in our body. It can weigh up to 3-4 pounds. The function of the liver is not only to secrete digestive juice but it performs many other functions. It filters the blood that keeps circulating in the body and it detoxifies the body of harmful substances.
10. From which part of digestive system does egestion take place?

Answer: Anus

Egestion is a process of removal of the undigested food material from the body through the anus. The anus is the lower part of the rectum that appears as a hole from outside the body below the hip from the backside. During egestion, the undigested food material which was stored in the rectum comes out through anus.
