Israel is located at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority. Israel is a small country, about the same size as the American state of New Jersey.

Israel is the ancient homeland of the Jewish people, going all the way back to Biblical times. For two thousand years the Jewish people were exiled from Israel, but they never stopped praying and dreaming of their return. After the terrible Holocaust during the Second World War, when six million Jews died, the countries of the world realized that Jews needed their own country.

The United Nations gave their support, and Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948.
3. What are the official languages of Israel?

Answer: Hebrew and Arabic

Hebrew is the usual language spoken in Israel. Arabic is also an official language, since Arabs are the largest minority in Israel. Hebrew and Arabic are both Semitic languages, and they have a lot in common. For instance, they are both writen from right to left. Since Israel is a country of immigrants, lots of languages are spoken there.

Holon, a city near Tel Aviv, has established itself as the "children's city" in Israel. Holon has a children's museum and theatre, many special parks, and a big parade on the Purim holiday.
