Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. OMG! A strange man just approached me, keeps calling me "thou", and wants me to go meet his friends Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth. Which English playwright and poet did I just meet?

Answer: William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (est. 1564-1616) is one of the most influential literary figures in history. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway when he was very young, at 18. Shakespeare wrote numerous renowned plays, such as "Hamlet", "Macbeth", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "As You Like It", "Othello" and most notably, "Romeo and Juliet". Shakespeare usually wrote comedies (plays with a happy ending, usually marriage) or tragedies (plays that usually end in death.) These works are recognized for conveying universal and timeless feelings, emotions and themes. Shakespeare also wrote many sonnets and poems throughout his lifetime, and is credited with coming up with a great part of the English language.

"OMG" stands for "oh my God", and it is frequently used to communicate surprise.
2. So this old guy whose teeth, BTW, are weird, just bumped into me and claims he wants independence. Which Continental Army commander, whose face appears on the American one dollar bill, is he?

Answer: George Washington

George Washington (1732-1799) was the first president of the United States after independence was accomplished from Britain in 1776. Originally a Colonel in the British army, Washington is known as one of America's Founding Fathers, since he led the Continental Army in their search for independence, now known as the American Revolution. Washington was elected unanimously and was president from 1789 to 1797. He passed away two years later, in 1799.

"BTW" means "by the way."
3. An apple just fell from the sky and hit someone's head! Which scientist, known for his laws of motion, yelled "GTG" and left me there while rambling about gravity?

Answer: Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726/27) was an English scientist, who is prominently known for his work on physics and mathematics. Newton came up with the laws of motion and universal gravitation, which are still valid to this day. It is said that an apple fell on Newton's head while he was sitting below an apple tree, and this was what triggered his laws of gravity, but this story is unconfirmed. His book "Principia" is recognized as one of the most important ones in the history of science.

"GTG" stands for "got to go."
4. William Clark claims he was a part of an important expedition commissioned by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, but he says he could've never made it without his BFF. What is the first name of his friend, whose last name is Lewis?

Answer: Meriwether

The journey, known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, lasted for two years, from 1804 to 1806. Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark were in charge of the expedition, which intended to explore territory that the country had recently obtained. They were joined by volunteers from the army. One of the highlights of this expedition was meeting Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who helped Lewis and Clark communicate with Native American tribes.

"BFF" means "best friend forever."
5. LOL! This guy's hair is so bizarre: white and messy, but he is also one of the most brilliant minds in history. Who is this German-born scientist whose work includes the theory of relativity and the equation E=mc^2?

Answer: Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German physicist. Most of Einstein's revolutionary discoveries occurred in Switzerland, where he studied in his pursuit to become a math and physics teacher. He is known for his mass/energy equivalence formula (E=mc^2), which says that matter is related to energy. Einstein completed some of the missing links from Isaac Newton's work. He won a Nobel Prize in 1921.

"LOL" stands for "laughing out loud."
6. This Frenchman claims to be one of the most important military figures in the history of his country, as he took over France in 1799 under the title of First Consul. Before I give you TMI, could you tell me which leader, known for the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo, is he?

Answer: Napoleon

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a distinguished military general who later became a politician and ruler of France. His supposedly short height (for an officer of the military) is one of the multiple reasons he is famous. Napoleon quickly rose in military ranks during the French Revolution. His ambition and excellent strategy led him to several significant victories, such as the Battle of Austerlitz, but then lost the battles of Trafalgar and Waterloo, which ultimately led to his exile and subsequent death.

"TMI" means "too much information."
7. Wow, WYWH to see this freshly painted "Mona Lisa!" When I asked this Italian Renaissance artist if painting is all he does, he said he is also a scientist, inventor and sculptor, which would tell you he is which of the following people?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was born in Vinci, Italy. He is often thought of as one of the greatest artists ever to exist, as he painted, sculpted and drew, and did so wonderfully! Some of his most famous works include "La Gioconda" (also known as the "Mona Lisa" and perhaps the most famous work of art displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris), "The Last Supper" and "The Vitruvian Man." Among the multiple things Da Vinci came up with as an inventor is an early version of the parachute.

"WYWH" stands for "wish you were here."
8. This Englishman's findings on evolution and natural selection marked a new era in science. Before I tell him I hate biology (JK, I love it!), would you mind helping me figure out who he is?

Answer: Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) five-year voyage in the HMS Beagle triggered his initial ideas on evolution. While at the Galapagos Islands, Darwin noticed small variations in the beaks of birds and in the shape of tortoise shells. Though scientist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is credited with the original idea of the theory of evolution, Darwin is recognized for coming up with the "how" of the theory. He is perhaps one of the most influential people in biology's history.

"JK" means "just kidding."
9. Next, I accidentally bump into a peaceful-looking man, thankfully he exclaims "NP!" Which leader, known for initiating a non-violent independence movement in India against the British government, and his fasts, is he?

Answer: Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) studied law in London when he was young. When he went to South Africa shortly afterwards, he experienced prejudice and became interested in civil rights. Gandhi led several non-violent campaigns in favor of India's independence from Britain, which included several fasts/hunger strikes and marches (like the famous Salt March). India became officially independent in 1947, just one year before Gandhi's death.

"NP" is a casual way to say "no problem."
10. This last person, who seems to be a very nice lady, is known for saying something along the lines: "IMO women should have the right to vote too, no?" Who is this American social reformer?

Answer: Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) is perhaps one of the most important women in contemporary American history. Since she was young, she showed interest and engaged in activism in favor of women's suffrage, or women's right to vote. She was also outspoken against slavery. On 1920, women in the United States finally earned the right to vote through the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, a moment Anthony would sadly not see as she passed away in 1906.

"IMO" stands for "in my opinion."
