Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you happened to visit this country on the 15th of August in any year, you would see the Prime Minister giving a speech from the Red Fort. Which country is this?

Answer: India

The Red Fort was built in the mid-17th century by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. For the next two centuries, it served as the residence of the Mughal rulers. The red colour is due to the sandstone used in the construction. This historic fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 15th of August marks India's independence from British colonial rule. On this day, the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

The photo shows the Taj Mahal, unarguably India's most famous monument. Incidentally, this was also built by Shah Jahan.
2. Buckingham Palace is the home of the monarch of which country?

Answer: United Kingdom

Buckingham Palace became the royal residence of the British monarch when Queen Victoria assumed the throne in 1837. It is the main residence of the British monarch. The palace has over 700 rooms and is also used for the administrative work involving the royal family and their public duties.

The photo shows Windsor Castle, another residence used by the British royal family. It is the oldest, still inhabited, castle in Europe.
3. In which country would you be able to visit a floating market to do your shopping? It is also home to various Buddhist temples.

Answer: Thailand

Thailand is located in the southeastern part of Asia. It is one of the only countries in the region not to have been colonized by European powers. Formerly known as Siam, the country has a majority Buddhist population.

A floating market is one where people sell and buy wares while rowing along the river. This is mainly for fruits and vegetables, though other items are also sold. These floating markets are now a popular tourist attraction. Similar markets are found in other neighbouring countries like Vietnam and Indonesia.

The photo shows one of the many Buddhist temples in the capital of Bangkok.
4. Known as the "Great White North", in which country would you be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains in the Banff National Park?

Answer: Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia. The Rockies are a large chain of mountains that range from British Colombia in Canada to New Mexico in USA - a distance of over 4,800 kilometers!

Banff National Park is located in the province of Alberta in Canada. It is the country's oldest national park having been established in 1885.

The photo shows Moraine Lake, a lake formed by melting glaciers. The bright blue colour is due to light reflecting off the rock flour that is deposited when the glaciers melt.
5. Where would you travel to visit the Palace of Versailles and marvel at the Hall of Mirrors?

Answer: France

The Palace of Versailles is located slightly outside the city of Paris in France. It was the residence of the French king for over a century starting in 1682 and ending with the French Revolution when the monarchy was abolished. The palace is famous for its architecture and gardens. The Hall of Mirrors is one of its most outstanding features consisting of a long hallway with seventeen large mirrors reflecting the windows that overlook the gardens. It was at the Palace of Versailles that the Treaty that ended World War I was signed.

The photo shows the Louvre, the largest art museum in the world. Located in Paris, the Louvre was originally a palace. It is home to famous artworks like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo.
6. A trip to which country is incomplete without a visit to the ancient city of Istanbul - one of the only major cities to lie across two continents?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey is spread across two continents - Asia and Europe, with the Asian part being significantly larger than the European. Its most famous and probably most visited city is Istanbul. Formerly the capital of Turkey, Istanbul itself straddles both Asia and Europe with a train line and bridges connecting the two parts.

The photo shows the Hagia Sophia, one of the most famous sites in Istanbul. It was originally built as a Greek Orthodox church. When the city became part of the Ottoman Empire, it was converted to a mosque. Finally when Turkey became a republic after World War I, it was converted into a museum. You can see original artwork of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, along side prayers and verses from the Koran inscribed in Arabic along the walls of the structure - a truly unique sight.
7. In which country would you be able to visit the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena?

Answer: Greece

Greece is often called the "cradle of democracy" having given rise to the form of government currently in place in most of the major countries of the world. With a history dating back to centuries, the country is full of archaeological wonders. Athens is named after Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and the patron of the city. The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to her and overlooks the city.

The photo shows the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, also found in Athens.
8. Famously associated with the fictional character of Dracula, in which country is the region of Transylvania located?

Answer: Romania

Transylvania is a historical region of Romania, bordered on two sides by the Carpathian mountain range. Bram Stoker used the region as the setting for his novel "Dracula", thus beginning its association with vampires in the eyes of the outside world.

The photo shows the Romanian Athenaeum, a concert hall in the city of Bucharest, Romania's capital.
9. The Great Wall was built to keep invading forces out of which country?

Answer: China

The Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive historical and architectural sights of the country. It covers a distance of over 21,000 kilometers. This is an outstanding feat by any measure, but even more so when you consider that the earliest parts were first constructed in the 7th century BC. The Wall was built to protect the kingdom from invaders.
10. Which country is home to Uluru, a large sandstone rock formation that rises in the middle of the desert?

Answer: Australia

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in the Northern Territory of Australia. The rock is sacred to the indigenous Aboriginal people who have inhabited this region for tens of thousands of years. Since Uluru is located in the middle of barren land with no other structures nearby, it is sometimes hard to understand how big it actually is.

At its highest point, it is 24 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower!
