Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first, and most important ingredient, is eggs. What type of egg can you use?

Answer: Either of these - it doesn't matter.

I never understood the difference between white or brown eggs. And no, it is not determined by the color of the chicken. But I have always had white eggs in my house.
2. Next you will definitely need something to cook in. Which one of the following would be the best thing to use to cook your omelette?

Answer: Frying pan/skillet

While you might be able to use any cooking material available for use on the stove, a frying pan or skillet is much easier for cooking your omelette.
3. Next we need some ingredients to add to our omelette. What dairy product might you use to make your omelette more flavorful?

Answer: Cheddar cheese

Actually you can use any type of cheese that will melt into and blend with your omelette. My favorite is cheddar because of its flavor but I have also enjoyed Swiss cheese, American cheese and, once, Muenster cheese.
4. I personally like to have some vegetables in my omelette. While there really is no wrong selection, the vegetable I am thinking of will make you shed tears when chopping it up for your omelette. Which one is it?

Answer: Onions

Onions add a lot of flavor to the omelette. I have seen omelettes with other vegetables in them, and personally would also add peppers, red, green, yellow or even Jalapeno.
5. Another addition in omelettes I really enjoy is also a favorite of mine on pizza. The most familiar type is often a brown-grey color, looks like an opened umbrella and can be chopped up. What is it?

Answer: Mushroom

Again, this is a personal preference and they add a lot of flavor to your omelette. You may see them growing on your lawn but I would not suggest eating those unless you are certain they are not poisonous.
6. I do enjoy meat in my omelette. This pork product is pink and tender and, when sliced thin, can be used on sandwiches. However, I want to cut it into small chunks. What meat am I talking about?

Answer: Ham

Bacon is my favorite meat for omelettes, but you can use ham, shrimp, chicken, turkey or whatever type of meat that is available and you would enjoy.
7. After we have gathered and prepared all of our ingredients, it is time to start cooking. How do we open the eggs?

Answer: Gently cracking them open

It is important to be careful when cracking open the egg. You do not want to get pieces of the shell into the contents of the egg as they do not cook very well and add no flavor.
8. Now that your eggs are in a bowl, you must stir them up so it becomes a consistent mixture between the whites and yolk of the egg. What utensil might you use to blend and stir the eggs?

Answer: Whisk

You can use a fork or other utensil with an open end to mix and blend the eggs to ensure the yolk gets thoroughly separated and mixed into the white of the egg. I also like to add a bit of milk to make it a bit creamier.
9. You are now ready to make your omelette. You must have a low to medium flame on your stove to begin heating the pan. Before putting the blended eggs into the pan which one of the following should you put in the pan?

Answer: Butter or margarine

Cooking oils make the omelette too watery. You also do not want it to stick to the pan while cooking. There are products you can use for this purpose other than butter or margarine but without the flavor of this ingredient.
10. You are now cooking your eggs and all of the ingredients, even adding others you may like. What utensil might you use while cooking and to remove your omelette from the cooking appliance?

Answer: Spatula

You turn over and fold the omelette until it is fully cooked which you can tell by the eggs no longer being liquid-like. Once you get good at mixing, turning and folding the omelette, if your pan is properly prepared with butter, you can slide your omelette onto a plate even without a spatula.
