Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meerkats are omnivores.

Answer: True

Meerkats are omnivores because they eat millipedes and spiders, scorpions, etc. as well as fruit. Omnivores are animals that eat both meat and vegetation. Carnivores eat meat and herbivores only eat plants.
2. What are meerkats excellent at?

Answer: Baby-sitting.

Meerkats are really good at baby-sitting. 1-4 adult meerkats stay behind whilst the rest of the mob and the dominant go foraging.
3. Meerkats see in black and white.

Answer: False

Meerkats see in colour and the blackness around their eyes act as sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun.
4. At what age are meerkats sexually mature?

Answer: One

Meerkats are sexually mature at the age of one year. Their litter size is an average of 3, but is usually 4 pups per litter. When pups are 3 weeks old, they are slightly bigger than an adult's index finger.
5. Meerkats are born blind and deaf.

Answer: True

Meerkat pups are born blind and deaf. Before 3 weeks they open their eyes. After that 3 weeks they step out of the den.
6. Which of the following is one of the meerkat's worst enemies?

Answer: Martial Eagle

Their two worst enemies are martial eagles and jackals. Many meerkats are killed and eaten as a snack by the eagle. Jackals usually kill and leave.
7. With what animals do meerkats sometimes share their burrows?

Answer: Ground squirrels

Sometimes meerkats share their burrows with ground squirrels, although it isn't a permanent arrangement.
8. What will the dominant female usually do to a non-dominant female who gets pregnant?

Answer: Evict her from the mob.

The dominant female usually evicts the pregnant female.
The pregnant female would do one of the following:
- Desert her newly born pups and try to become part of the mob again,
- Stay with her pups and live on her own and try to find a mate to start a new mob with.

If the female did desert her pups, the dominant female may let her back in because she is lactating (producing milk) so the dominant's pups can drink both female's milk and get the best start in life.
9. In which of the deserts below might you find meerkats?

Answer: Kalahari

Meerkats live in the Kalahari desert. The Kalahari is in Botswana, in the south of Africa.
10. What is the scientific name for a meerkat?

Answer: Suricata suricatta

Meerkats' scientific name is Suricata suricatta. Meerkats are also known as suricates. Rhinco typus is whale shark, Equidae burchelli is zebra and Tursiops truncatus is bottle-nose dolphin.
