Animal Husbandry for Kids! Trivia Quiz

Hey kids, this topic might sound a bit strange but it has nothing to do with marrying animals! It's about looking after and breeding certain types of animals, often (but not always) on a farm. You might be surprised how much you already know about it!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animal husbandry has been happening for many years across the world. Which people would have been most likely to look after animals in this way in America in the 1800s?

Answer: Cowboys

Since cowboys lived and worked on the land, they often raised cows to give them milk, and horses for transport. In Australia, there were farmers and stockmen who did the same thing.
2. Since animal husbandry is about domestic (tame) animals, which one of the following would NOT be included on a list of animals which you could raise in this way?

Answer: Rattlesnakes

There would be no reason to look after rattlesnakes (or any snakes for that matter) in this sense, because they don't provide food or any other product that is useful to people.
3. Animal husbandry doesn't include looking after the health of your animals, because we have vets to do that.

Answer: False

Caring for the health of animals is a very big part of animal husbandry. It is true that there are vets to help you when your animals are sick, but you also have to prevent them from becoming sick in the first place by feeding them properly and making sure you check them regularly for any signs of disease.
4. If you don't like animals, should you start practicing animal husbandry?

Answer: No, never!

It's very important that you actually care about the animals you are raising. You also will be better at caring for the animals if you get to know them: animals have personalities too!
5. Which of the following products might you sell from practising animal husbandry?

Answer: Wool

Many farmers make a living out of selling wool from their animals such as sheep, goats and even llamas. But it's not just about the money: it's also about bringing up strong and healthy animals.
6. What is a good reason for kids to get involved in animal husbandry?

Answer: One day they might take over from their parents.

Many kids who grow up on farms with animals learn how to care from them by starting from a very young age and learning from their parents. In many cases, those kids go on to take over the property and the responsibility for the animals.
7. Can you learn more about animal husbandry by studying it at college (university)?

Answer: Yes

You can study many types of animal husbandry, including how to grow certain types of crops to feed animals, how to bring up different types of animals, and much more.
8. Is it a good idea to have a first aid kit for animals on your property?

Answer: Yes, always.

If your animals are sick or injured, it's always a good idea to have some equipment to help them. This would include bandages to help treat any cuts, and a thermometer to take their temperature.
9. There are a few places on earth that animal husbandry is just not possible because of the climate. Which one of these places is in that category?

Answer: Antarctica

No-one actually lives in Antarctica permanently, and there are no domestic animals, so it's unlikely that animal husbandry would ever happen there.
10. If you love animals and are willing to learn all about them, there are lots of jobs you could have that involve animal husbandry.

Answer: True

Anyone who takes care of domesticated animals does this, so there are many jobs (involving many types of animals) that you could do!
