Answer: David Almond

Almond won the prize, often referred to as the Nobel prize of children's literature, following in the footsteps of previous British winners, Eleanor Farjeon in 1956 and Aidan Chambers in 2002.
As well as "Skellig", which was made into a film in 2009, Almond has also written young adult novels about the Cuban missile crisis ("The Fire Eaters" (2003)), the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice ("A Song For Ella Grey" (2014)) and in 2010, published "My Name Is Mina", a prequel to "Skellig".

Although Bishop missed out on the main Newbery Medal, her books were still highly regarded by the medal committee and are still an enjoyable read today. "Pancakes-Paris" is set at the end of World War II and tells a story of hope and friendship through the story of Charles attempting to make crepes from a box of American pancake flour, while in "All Alone", ten year old Marcel must make the choice between helping a friend or obeying his father.
Bishop was a huge advocate of reading for children, and started the very first library for children in France.

New York native Mary Mapes Dodge not only introduced the Dutch sport of speed skating to Americans, she also popularised a fictional Dutch hero, with a tale found within the book of a boy who plugged a dike with his finger. This boy, referred to in "Hans Brinker; or, the Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland" as "The Hero of Haarlem", is largely unknown in Netherlands and is actually an American folk story.
"Hans Brinker; or, the Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland" has been adapted for film several times, including twice by Disney in 1962 and 1998.

It is a powerful and raw book, which manages to be honest and believable and is a favourite of many adults as well as young adults.

Hunter wrote the Professor Branestawm series over a fifty year period between 1933 and 1983, and each book featured the most marvelous illustrations of Branestawm's eccentric inventions, drawn by greats such as W. Heath Robinson and Gerald Rose.
Hunter also wrote several books on magic and was for a brief time in the 1930s a stage magician.

"Stig Of The Dump" is by far King's best known book and is still loved by children in 2019. It tells the tale of Barney, a young boy staying at his grandparent's house in Kent, who meets a caveman at the local chalk pit, used by villagers as a rubbish dump.
"Hamid of Aleppo", King's other best seller covered a completely different subject matter, as it was about a Syrian Golden Hamster who unearthed antiquities while digging tunnels.

The books were a success right from the start due to her imaginative story telling and her illustrations which lit up the pages, as well as her descriptive depictions of the Lake District countryside which she loved.

When she died in 1943, she left almost all of her possessions to the National Trust, as well as most of the original illustrations for her books.

Sharp wrote a total of nine books in "The Rescuers" series between 1959 and 1978, with the classic Disney film being based mainly on the second in the series, "Miss Bianca" (1962). This wasn't the only work by Sharp to be made into a movie as her adult novels "The Nutmeg Tree" (1937), "Cluny Brown" (1944) and "Britannia Mews" (1946) were all adapted for the silver screen.

Springer also wrote the award winning children's fantasy novel, "I Am Mordred" (1998) about the son conceived between King Arthur and his half sister.
