Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode interestingly starts with a scene that is similar to the introductory scene from the 'Pokémon' games Red and Blue version. The show begins with a Gengar battling which other Pokémon?

Answer: Nidorino

The scene sees a Gengar fight a Nidorino, like in the 'Pokémon Red' intro scene. In 'Pokémon Red' the battle is between a Gengar and a Nidorino and in 'Pokémon Blue' the battle is between a Gengar and a Jigglypuff.
2. We see Ash, the protagonist of the series, talking in his sleep about which Pokémon he wants to pick from Professor Oak, and we see him dreaming about calling his chosen Pokémon to battle. Which Pokémon do we see him dream about first?

Answer: Bulbasaur

.Pokémon trainers can choose a Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle from Professor Oak to aid them on their Pokémon adventure. This choice is a special one that Ash is thinking about carefully as each Pokémon is known for their different strengths and weaknesses. Pikachu is traditionally not a starter Pokémon.
3. Ash oversleeps, and worried that he has missed his chance to receive a Pokémon from Professor Oak, he rushes out in his pyjamas and heads for the lab. On his way down he bumps into someone who will be his rival throughout the series. What is this person's name?

Answer: Gary

Gary Oak is Professor Oak's grandson, and also about to embark on a Pokémon adventure with his own Pokémon which he received from the Professor. Gary and Ash instantly dislike each other. Gary leaves Pallet Town with his fan club behind him.
4. It seems that Ash is too late when it comes to choosing a starter Pokémon as all but one has been taken. Ash instantly loves his new Pikachu that Professor Oak had given to him, but how does Pikachu respond to Ash?

Answer: It uses ThunderShock on him

Did you know that the Pokémon Clefairy was originally going to be Ash's companion before writers changed it to Pikachu? This was because they wanted to attract both boys and girls to the show and they felt that Clefairy would be too gender-biased.
After being shocked, Professor Oak tells Ash a bit of information about Pikachu before giving him his Pokédex (Pokémon Dexter) and some Pokéballs.
5. Ash is greeted by his mother and a small cheering group outside of the Pokémon lab. His mother meets Pikachu, but she accidentally offends it causing the electric mouse to use ThunderShock on the group. How exactly did she offend it?

Answer: She said it was weird for not going inside its Pokéball

Professor Oak informs Ash that the rubber gloves his mother gave him would come in handy as rubber blocks electricity.
6. Ash finally sets off on his adventure with Pikachu, but it is apparent that Pikachu does not like Ash. While trying to befriend Pikachu, a wild Pokémon appears on the route; which Pokémon is it?

Answer: Pidgey

Ash wants to catch this Pidgey, but Pikachu does not want to help, so Ash tries to catch it without Pikachu's help.
7. Whilst trying to catch this wild Pokémon, Ash resorts to unorthodox methods of weakening it in a bid to catch it while Pikachu laughs at his attempts. Ash then throws a rock at the Pokémon, but hits another Pokémon instead: which Pokémon does he hit?

Answer: Spearow

The Spearow is angered and very upset by the thrown rock and tries to attack Ash and Pikachu.
8. We see a young girl fishing in the river after the chase ensues between Ash and the attacked Pokémon. This girl becomes a major character in the series; what is her name?

Answer: Misty

Misty not only becomes Ash's future travelling companion, but she is also the gym leader of Cerulean City, which specialises in the water type Pokémon.
9. Ash and Pikachu are fleeing from the attacking Pokémon as best as they can, but the Pokémon catch up easily. Ash tries to protect the injured Pikachu, but he doesn't need to as someone saves the day. Who stops the Pokémon from attacking Ash and Pikachu?

Answer: Ash's Pikachu

Yes, Ash's Pikachu summons up the strength to save itself and Ash from the attacking Spearow using the thunderstorm to its advantage, though it becomes very weak afterwards.
10. At the end of the episode Ash sees a large bird Pokémon fly across the sky. Ash whips out his Pokédex to find out what Pokémon this is, but Dexter does not know. Why does the Pokédex not know?

Answer: This Pokémon had not been discovered yet

The Pokémon Ash saw was Ho-oh, a legendary Pokémon from the neighbouring region of Johto. Ho-oh has never appeared in a Pokémon movie but starring in the first episode is an honour in its own right.
