Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which children from our world featured in the story entitled 'Prince Caspian'?

Answer: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy

The four children from 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' return for this adventure. We don't meet Eustace until he goes with Edmund and Lucy on the 'Dawn Treader', or Jill until she and Eustace go in search of Prince Rilian in 'The Silver Chair'.
2. What food did Edmund say he would prefer to raw apples?

Answer: bread and margarine

'I shouldn't mind a good thick slice of bread and margarine this minute.'
3. Who predicted that the Kings and Queens would be very glad of the apple trees one day?

Answer: Lilygloves, the chief Mole

The children remembered the orchard being planted, Pomona blessing the plants and the chief Mole leaning on his spade and saying how they would be thankful for the trees one day.
4. Which one of the gifts Father Christmas gave the children in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was not in the treasure chamber?

Answer: Susan's Horn

Edmund did not receive a gift as he was not with them at the time. The Cordial, the Sword, the Dagger and the Bow and Arrows were stored safely in the chamber. The Horn had been the means of calling the children back to Narnia, and was with Prince Caspian at that time.
5. What was the first thing Trumpkin said to the children?

Answer: 'Well, whatever they say, you don't feel like ghosts.'

Trumpkin said each of the answers, but, of course, could only say one of them when he was unbound. He had grown up with rumours that the woods were full of ghosts, and that was obviously what he thought first.
6. Caspian was not a native Narnian, as he learnt from his tutor, Dr Cornelius. From what country did his race come?

Answer: Telmar

They were Telmarines. Their story went back even further, for their ancestors came from earth. Some sailors found a cave on an island with a door to the other world, and went through to father the Telmarine race. This is explained by Aslan at the end of this book.
7. What event caused Dr Cornelius to send Caspian into the woods in the middle of the night?

Answer: His aunt had given birth to a son

Dr Cornelius told Caspian that his Uncle Miraz had already killed his father to become King, and with his own son having been born, he was not likely to let Caspian remain the heir to the crown.
8. Which of the Old Narnians wanted to kill Caspian before he woke up?

Answer: Nikabrik

Nikabrik was to cause trouble later as well; Trumpkin was a loyal servant, if a little opinionated. Trufflehunter was a Badger, and as such friendly and loyal. Reepicheep has not yet made an appearance in the book.
9. Why was Caspian unable to complete his speech on the night of the Great Council?

Answer: Dr Cornelius arrived with bad news

Camillo the Hare alerted the gathering to a strange smell, and when it was investigated they discovered it was Dr Cornelius.
10. When it seemed that war was inevitable, who said, 'All I ask is that the King will put me and my people in the front.'

Answer: Reepicheep the Mouse

This is where Reepicheep, one of my favourite characters, first appears in the story. Mice were given the gift of speech after they had gnawed away the ropes that bound Aslan on the Stone Table in 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Reepicheep was to accompany Caspian on the 'Dawn Treader' and was at the gates of the Narnia within the real Narnia at the end of 'The Last Battle'.
11. According to Dr Cornelius, why did the Telmarines let the woods overtake the eastern edge of Narnia?

Answer: They were fearful of the sea

The Telmarines were afraid of the sea, and what may come over the sea (we surmise from 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' that this could refer to Aslan, but we do not know for certain). They let the woods take over the whole area and set about rumours that woods contain ghosts (probably from the sightings of the wood-nymphs).

Some Telmarines could believe it, but in general it was just a story to keep people away from the coast.
12. Where did the Old Narnians and Caspian go to draw their battle-lines?

Answer: Aslan's How

Aslan's How was the mound which had been raised up over the Stone Table on which Aslan had been killed by the White Witch in 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'. The mound was a maze of corridors and rooms, with the broken Stone Table central to all.
13. Who was indirectly responsible for losing the battle which was fought immediately prior to the conference when Caspian decided to use the Horn?

Answer: Giant Wimbleweather

The giant, unfortunately, broke out with his party at the wrong time and from the wrong place, and caused the loss of many of Caspian's army.
14. Who was NOT at council with Caspian?

Answer: Reepicheep

Also there was the Badger. It was at this meeting that it was agreed to use Queen Susan's Horn to summon help. Trumpkin was sent to Cair Pavarel, and they sent Patterwig the Squirrel to Lantern Waste to see if assistance arrived in either of those places.
15. Edmund nicknamed Trumpkin with three letters. What were they?

Answer: DLF

It stood for 'Dear Little Friend' - Trumpkin had called them his 'dear little friends', and Edmund turned it around. It was shortened to the letters at Trumpkin's request.
16. Two of the children challenged Trumpkin to prove they were capable of helping Caspian. Which two?

Answer: Edmund and Susan

Edmund had a fencing joust, and Susan challenged him to an archery competition. Both children won. When they discovered that Trumpkin was wounded, Lucy used her Cordial and after his wound was magically healed, Trumpkin admitted that the children could save Narnia.
17. Which of the following is NOT a summer constellation in the Narnian night sky?

Answer: Kettle

Lucy went for a walk alone the first night they were on the mainland. She tried to waken the spirits of the trees, but to no avail.
18. Who voted with Lucy when she said that Aslan was showing her the right way to go?

Answer: Edmund

"When we first discovered Narnia, it was Lucy who discovered it first and none of us would believe her. I was the worst of the lot, I know, yet she was right after all. Wouldn't it be fair to believe her this time? I vote for going up."
19. What was waiting for them as they walked down the gorge, a route contrary to Lucy's directions?

Answer: an armed outpost of Miraz's army

There was a discussion about the route they had taken, and both Edmund and Trumpkin accepted the blame for directing the group wrongly. Together they agreed to back up and go the way Lucy had suggested.
20. What happened to Lucy that night?

Answer: She saw Aslan

Lucy spoke with Aslan, and he told her to wake the others up to get started straight away. She didn't get a lot of support or sympathy, except from Edmund (even though he was grumpy about losing his sleep), but she insisted that they went, or at least she would go.

The others finally agreed as Peter did not want the group to split up. Susan did not apologise until it was nearly morning and they had reached Aslan's How.
21. What did Aslan call Trumpkin?

Answer: Son of Earth

Humans were called 'Son(s) of Adam' and 'Daughter(s) of Eve', and Dwarfs were 'Sons of Earth'.
22. Nikabrik brought two friends into the central chamber while Caspian was in conference. Who were they?

Answer: a hag and a werewolf

Nikabrik, the hag and the werewolf wanted to bring the White Witch back with black magic. They were fighting with Caspian, Dr Cornelius and Trufflehunter when Peter, Edmund and Trumpkin arrived and saved the day.
23. A challenge to single combat was issued to Miraz, and it was accepted. During the fight with Peter, Miraz was stabbed, but by whom?

Answer: Glozelle

Glozelle and Sopespian incited the Telmarines to battle by screaming about treachery when Miraz tripped; Glozelle then stabbed his king. The Old Narnians won the resulting battle, thanks due in a great part to the fact that the trees had awoken and old tales of ghosts terrified the army.
24. Susan and Lucy were having a happier time; they were with Aslan as he was putting things right in Narnia. At one point he released a little girl from a classroom. What was her name?

Answer: Gwendolyn

This chapter is great fun! Alsan told Bacchus to destroy the bridge at Beruna, he rescued girls such as Gwendolyn, he cured a little boy's grandmother (who was Caspian's old nurse), he saved a boy from being beaten - and a whole host of other things.
25. What did Aslan do for Reepicheep?

Answer: He gave him back his tail

Reepicheep was already the High Mouse, and as such was a brave leader who was not afraid of death. He was badly wounded in battle, and Lucy's Cordial had cured all his wounds but his missing tail. Because of the great love of the other Mice (who were ready to chop off their own tails), Aslan restored Reepicheep's tail.
