Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Matilda's older brother?

Answer: Mike

Matilda lived with her father, mother, and older brother, Mike (whose full name was Michael). Her father ran a used-car company, her mother enjoyed playing Bingo, whilst Mike was the favored child, which was just fine by Matilda. That left her to do what she wanted to do - anything she wanted.
2. What did Matilda use to make her parents think that their house was haunted?

Answer: A parrot

Matilda wanted to get back at her parents for being mean to her, so she decided to play tricks on them. One involved borrowing a neighbor's pet parrot and hiding it up the chimney. That way, whenever Matilda's parents would come into the living room, they would hear a voice coming out of (seemingly) nowhere, saying "hello, hello, hello!" or "rattle my bones!".
3. What was the name of the girl who wore her hair in plaits?

Answer: Amanda

A girl made the mistake of wearing her long hair in plaits. Miss Trunchbull hated plaits, so she threw poor Amanda across the yard by her plaits. Luckily Amanda wasn't hurt, but that's when Matilida realized how evil Miss Trunchbull could be.
4. What did Matilda say was the fault in C.S. Lewis' writing?

Answer: There weren't any funny parts

Miss Honey and Matilda spent the first day of school discussing various books. Matilda commented that she thought C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were very fine writers, but didn't include enough funny bits in their works. C.S. Lewis wrote "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe", and J.R.R. Tolkien wrote "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings".
5. What was the device called that forced children to stand at attention?

Answer: The Chokey

The Chokey was a cabinet that was exactly the size of a child. It had bits of broken glass in it so that if you leaned back at all, or forward, you would get poked and cut up. It forced you to stand up straight, at attention, for as long as you were in there. Miss Trunchbull used it to punish children.
6. What did Matilda have to eat at Miss Honey's cottage?

Answer: Bread and margarine

Matilda went for tea at Miss Honey's small cottage, which Miss Honey rented at ten pence per week. Miss Honey could only afford few food items; milk, tea, bread and margarine.
7. What did Matilda use to practice her powers?

Answer: A cigar

Matilda became determined to defeat Miss Trunchbull after finding out from Miss Honey what awful things Miss Trunchbull was capable of. Matilda practiced lifting a cigar with her eyes at home, until she could do whatever she wanted with it from across the room without touching it. After six days of practicing, she was ready for her plan to take place.
8. What did the writing on the blackboard NOT say?

Answer: Remember me? I am Magnus.

Matilda used a stick of chalk as she had she practiced with the cigar, and wrote a message on the blackboard one Thursday afternoon when Miss Trunchbull was in the classroom. She acted like it was from the ghost of Miss Honey's father, Magnus, which scared Miss Trunchbull out of town.
9. How long was the walk from Miss Honey's new house to Matilda's house?

Answer: Eight minutes

After defeating Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey got to live in Miss Trunchbull's old house. The walk was about eight minutes from Matilda's, but Matilda did not mind it. Once, when making the walk from Miss Honey's to her own house, she discovered something going on her house that made her run back to Miss Honey's house - she made it at a run in four minutes.
10. After defeating Miss Trunchbull, Matilda didn't use her powers again.

Answer: True

Miss Honey supposed that the reason Matilda's powers existed was because Matilda's great mind was never being challenged, so there was too much extra energy in her head. That energy made her able to do the things she had been able to do. But after defeating Miss Trunchbull, Matilda took harder classes at school, so there was no extra energy any longer.
