Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. CHEMISTRY:- Substances are usually described as mixtures, elements or compounds. Which of these is pure (or distilled) water?

Answer: Compound

Pure water is a compound, made up of 2 atoms of hydrogen to 1 atom of oxygen to form 1 molecule of water, with a chemical formula of H2O.
Chemistry is the study of how different substances react with each other.
2. PHYSICS:- Which state would you expect to find water in a glass at room temperature?

Answer: Liquid

The three states of matter that concern us most are solid, liquid and gas. Temperature affects the state in which substances exist. If we cool water below O degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), it becomes a solid (ice). If we heat it above 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit), it becomes a gas (water vapour). Between those two temperatures, it is usually a liquid.
Physics is simply the study of matter (the physical world).
3. ASTRONOMY:- How many moons does the planet Mars have?

Answer: 2

A moon is a satelite of a planet. Earth has one moon, simply called 'the moon'.
Mercury and Venus have none. The gaseous giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) each have several. Mars has two, whose names are Phobos and Deimos.
Astronomy is the study of space.
4. ANATOMY:- Which of these bones is located in our leg?

Answer: Tibia

The tibia is the larger bone (shin-bone) in our lower leg, together with the fibula. The humerus is the upper bone in our arm and the radius and ulna are in the lower arm.
Human anatomy is the study of the structures in our bodies. Bones (206 of them) make up our skeletal system.
5. BOTANY:- A gum tree belongs to which of these groups?

Answer: Eucalypt

Gum trees, with that familiar smell, are eucalypts, some species of whose leaves are the only thing koalas will eat. Banksias are bottlebrushes, acacias are the wattles and conifers are cone-bearing trees, like the pine tree.
Botany is the study of plants (flora).
6. GEOLOGY:- Which of these rock types would be classed as igneous?

Answer: Granite

Igneous rocks are formed from cooling material from volcanoes. Granite is formed from cooling magma deep underground.
Sandstone (from sand particles) and limestone (from shells of dead animals) are sedimentary, formed when material is compacted, often under water.
Marble is metamorphic (changed) and is formed when limestone has been put under tremendous pressure and heat.
Geology is the study of rocks and minerals.
7. ZOOLOGY:- Which of the following Australian mammals is NOT a herbivore?

Answer: Echidna

Herbivores eat plants. The echidna (spiny anteater) more correctly eats termites, and is therefore an insectivore.
Zoology is the study of animals (fauna).
8. PHYSIOLOGY:- Which of the following body organs is known as the 'warehouse'?

Answer: Liver

The liver gets this nickname because it stores excess amounts of substances the body produces, such as glycogen.
The heart, of course, pumps blood and the brain controls all bodily functions. The appendix? Rather useless to us, which is why we don't miss it if we have it removed.
Physiology is the study of how the body's various tissues, organs and systems operate.
9. MARINE BIOLOGY :- Which of these marine (sea) creatures is a crustacean?

Answer: Crab

The crab is the crustacean, as are prawns and lobsters.
The squid is a mollusc (soft-bodied animals, like octopus, snails and oysters).
The starfish is an echinoderm (spiny-skinned) like the sea urchin.
The jellyfish is a coelenterate (has stinging cells), like the coral polyp.
Marine Biology is a growing area of science, concerned with life in the seas.
10. COMEDY? RIDDLE? TRUTH? Scientifically speaking, the chicken came before the egg.

Answer: False

Technically, the egg came first: not necessarily laid by a chicken, but the eggs of dinosaurs and fish and insects etc were around long before chickens appeared on the scene (according to scientific studies).
