Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Katie: Our family went to Washington DC. We took this picture of this long black wall with names carved in it. It was a tribute to all who died in a war. What war memorial was it?

Answer: The Vietnam Memorial

Katie: The founder of the Vietnam Memorial was Jan Scruggs who had served in Vietnam who wanted to recognize all of those who had served in Vietnam. In 1980 Maya Lin, an undergraduate at Yale University, was the designer of the "Wall", as it is sometimes called.

The Walls and the landscaping were completed in November, 1982. Dad had a great uncle who died in the Vietnam War, and he was sad when he found his name on the Memorial.
2. Billy: Dad had to travel for work, and brought the family along. Mom brought us to see a lot of pyramids, and a big statue of a creature that was half man, half lion. Mom said it was a Spinks. Teacher: I think that is pronounced Sphinx. Billy: Oh. Sorry. Well, we saw a big river, and Mom said it was the longest in the world. Where in Africa did we go?

Answer: Egypt

Billy: Egypt gets pretty hot during the summer: it is right next to the Sahara Desert, the biggest desert in the world. Mom said the pyramids and the Sphinx go back thousands of years.
3. Lily: We got in the car and drove to see some presidents carved into a big mountain. Dad said it was called Mount Rushmore. There was George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and, umm, one more. Teacher: Was it Thomas... Lily: JEFFERSON! Thanks, Mrs. Jones. Do you know what state we went to?

Answer: South Dakota

Lily: Mount Rushmore was HUGE! Even though we were a long way away, we could still see the faces clearly from miles away. The tour guide said it is the largest sculpture ever made. People go up every year to fill in the cracks that form from erosion and stuff.
4. Alicia: We got on a plane and flew to see our ancestors' land in Europe. There were lots of Vans and Vanders and Vers in their names. We also went to see this statue about the young boy who put his finger in the leaking dike to plug it up and stop the leak. What country did we go to?

Answer: The Netherlands

Alicia: Stories of Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates have been written in the Netherlands, sometimes they call it Holland. Mom always thought Hans Brinker was the boy to plugged up the dike, but we found out that isn't true. The boy never had a name; Hans Brinker got associated by mistake.
5. Caden: We went to visit my uncle. He showed us all over the big city. We went and saw Times Square, the Empire State Building, and he got us tickets to see "The Lion King" on Broadway. I had seen the movie, but this was done with really cool puppets on a stage. I liked it better than the movie. What city did we drive to?

Answer: New York City

Caden: I wish we had more time to stay, there was so much to do. Dad said he wanted to get pizza in downtown New York, because it is famous for their pizza. And we didn't get to see the Statue of Liberty which is out on an island just off the coast of New York City.
6. Alex: You thought the pizza was good there? You didn't have the pizza we had on my trip. We went to Giordano's and had deep dish pizza that was so thick I couldn't even finish one piece. Mom and Dad also took me to Wrigley Field and we watched a baseball game. And we went to the top of Willis Tower. Teacher: Don't you mean Sears Tower? Alex: Lots of people called it that, but the guides say it is now named the Willis Tower. Where did we go?

Answer: Chicago

Alex: The Willis Tower was so high! It was a little cloudy, so I wasn't able to see as much I could have, but we saw everything there is to see from up there. The guide says it used to be the tallest building in the world, but there are buildings that taller now. And the baseball game was cool. We saw the Cubs play the Dodgers.
7. Brittany: We got on a plane and went to Europe also. My nanny came along, and babysat me while Mom and Dad had a date for one evening. Mom said she always wanted to see the Awful Tower. Teacher: (chuckling) I think you need to say EIFFEL Tower. Brittany: That's what it is. I did get to go to Champs-Élysées, and we got to see lots of stores and performers on the street. Can you tell where we went?

Answer: Paris

Brittany: Paris was pretty neat, but none of us spoke French, so it made things difficult at times. We also saw the Arc de Triomphe, which was a monument created by Napoleon Bonaparte. Paris was too big for us to see in a week, but we saw a lot of it.
8. Randy: We went to a place that is known for its storms. They have had a storm there for a long time. They call it the Great Red Spot. Here is a picture of it. Teacher: Randy. Now you know you didn't go there for vacation. Nobody has ever been to the Great Red Spot. That is not even on our planet. It is on...

Answer: Jupiter

Randy: Well, everybody else got to go on vacation, and we weren't able to. I read a book about it Jupiter this summer, and I wanted to be part of show and tell.

Teacher: You did a good job in telling us about the Great Red Spot, but it isn't nice to lie. Please take your seat.
9. Avery: We were on a plane for a long time. But Mom and Dad took me to see the Sydney Opera House, and we went out into the wilderness where we saw koalas living in their natural habitat. We then went over to another country to see where they filmed the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I recognized a couple of the places. Do you know what country we went to FIRST?

Answer: Australia

Avery: Australia has opposite seasons from us, so we were there in the winter. It wasn't near as cold as our winters in the Midwest United States, they only get as low as about 50 degrees or so. They say 12 degrees, but they do their temperatures in Celsius. Koalas are very cute.

They spent most of their day up in trees eating leaves. The "Lord of the Rings" movies were filmed in New Zealand, which is located to the east of Australia.
10. Lucy: We took a plane to a place that Dad said was made by volcanoes. We had a hotel that had a party called a luau, and we saw hula dancers and heard some awesome music. Mom even went up to try and dance with the dancers. She did OK. Do you know where we went?

Answer: Hawaii

Lucy: Hawaii is a state from the United States. Our guides said that Polynesians were the first to live on the island around the year 300. It became part of the USA in 1959. It is a beautiful state. Mom watched the show "Lost", and said this is where it was filmed. And Dad watches "Hawaii Five-O", and he showed me some of the places that were on that show. We went on a hike up in the mountains, which had lots of pretty flowers everywhere.

It was very beautiful. And it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be.
