Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Lightning Thief" Grover brings along his reed pipes for the quest to find Zeus's Master Bolt. He claims that he can only play two songs on them. One is a Mozart symphony. What is the other song?

Answer: "So Yesterday" - Hillary Duff

"So Yesterday" is the song that Grover can play along with the Mozart symphony. But, since Percy notes that the symphony still sounds a little like Hillary Duff, that may actually be the only song he knows.
2. "The Lightning Thief" Which god approaches Percy, Annabeth, and Grover in Denver, Colorado and asks them to do a side quest for him?

Answer: Ares

Ares approaches them in a diner in Colorado, and Percy immediately dislikes the god. He asks them to retrieve Aphrodite's scarf for him, because if he went, Haphaestus would have caught him and made fun of him on Olympus. Percy and Annabeth are able to retrieve the scarf, and Ares gives them help on their way to the Underworld, but also gives them a backpack with the Master Bolt in it, hoping to trap them in the Underworld, and beginning a war.
3. "The Lightning Thief" What other weapon aside from the Master Bolt was stolen during the Winter Solstice?

Answer: The Helm of Darkness of Hades

Luke Castellan also stole the Helm of Darkness while he was stealing the Master Bolt. When Percy goes to Hades to ask for the Master Bolt, Hades mocks him, thinking that Percy was the thief. Percy then realizes that he has the Master Bolt with him in his backpack. Once Percy realizes this, he realizes that the real thief was Ares, and he fights the god of war to reclaim the Helm from him.
4. "The Sea of Monsters" Clarisse has a ship that is made up of dead soldiers. She got the ship from her father, Ares. It is claimed that the spirits of the losing side of a war must serve Ares before they are able to move on. What American war were these ghosts from?

Answer: The Civil War

The dead soldiers were Confederates, the losers of the Civil War. They are on a steamboat from the era, but Clarisse tricks the ship out with celestial bronze weaponry. The crew saves Percy and Annabeth from a hydra, and then the crew is decimated by Scylla and Charybdis when they enter the Sea of Monsters.
5. "The Sea of Monsters" The cyclops that has the Golden Fleece, Polyphemus, was stabbed in the eye by an ancient Greek hero. Annabeth later tells the cyclops that she is this person, which enrages him. Who is this ancient Greek hero?

Answer: Odysseus

Annabeth claims to be "Nobody", which was the exact same thing that Odysseus told the cyclops when he landed on his island. Odysseus ends up stabbing the cyclops in the eye, leaving him half-blind. This book, "The Sea of Monsters", is very similar to the trials that Odysseus goes through during "The Odyssey".

Perseus, who Percy is named after, is mentioned but never appears in the books.

Answer: Calypso's island

Percy and Annabeth both encounter Scylla and Charybdis when they are traveling with Clarisse on her ghost ship. They both end up on Circe's island, where Percy is transformed into a guinea pig for a short time. Then, they travel past the Sirens, and Annabeth listens to their song to try to learn from them.

Percy encounters Calypso in "The Battle of the Labyrinth", when he is blown out of a volcano. He stays for a while and then leaves, and she is left alone until Leo Valdez encounters her in the "Heroes of Olympus" series.

Odysseus, on his journey, went through all four of these trials during his Odyssey.
7. "The Titan's Curse" Who ends up killing the Manticore when the creature encounters the heroes on the docks?

Answer: Dionysus

Dionysus, or Mr. D if you will, kills the manticore after Percy sends an Iris message to him. Mr. D makes vines wrap around the manticore until he turns to dust. The manticore had previously defeated Percy and Thalia, and their odds' weren't high to beat him at the docks. Percy sends an Iris message, so Dionysus reluctantly helps them.
8. "The Titan's Curse" What was Atlas's nickname in the first part of the book?

Atlas is called the General for the first part of the book by Luke and the various henchmen in the book. It is later revealed who he is, and that he is Zoe's father.
9. "The Titan's Curse" Where does Percy meet Rachel Elizabeth Dare?

Answer: The Hoover Dam

Percy mistakes Rachel blowing her nose as a skeleton. He tries to run her through, and because she is mortal, the blade passes clean through her. Answer: Hera

Percy prays to the gods Apollo and Artemis for help with the bow, as they typically are the archers of the gods. Percy kills Geryon, and assumes that one of them helped him. It is later revealed that Hera was the one who guided the arrow, when she demands respect from Percy and Annabeth for her help.
12. "The Battle of the Labyrinth" Which god visits Percy on Calypso's island to tell him what happened outside of Ogygia?

Answer: Hephaestus

13. "The Last Olympian" Which Titan fights Poseidon for the duration of the book?

Answer: Oceanus

When Percy goes to his father's palace, he sees Oceanus leading a siege on Poseidon. Oceanus had been neutral in the first war, but Kronos had convinced him to fight against Poseidon now. Poseidon goes out to fight him, and the power from their duel causes tsunamis and hurricanes. Poseidon eventually leaves the siege to help the other gods defeat Typhon.

When Kronos loses, Oceanus goes back into hiding.
14. "The Last Olympian" The Minotaur makes his comeback in this book. Who slays the monster this time?

Answer: Percy Jackson

Percy once again gets to kill the Minotaur, this time slaying the creature with his own axe. This is the second time that Percy slays the monster, killing him with the Minotaur's own weapon or body parts both times.

Michael Yew is killed on the Williamsburg Bridge shortly after Percy kills the Minotaur. Thalia and Annabeth do not fight the Minotaur.
15. "The Last Olympian" When Dionysus is struck by Typhon and must recover, he reaches out to Percy. The entire encounter with Percy, Dionysus is playing an arcade game. Which one is it?

Answer: Pac-Man

Dionysus loves the game Pac-Man, and he's very good at it as Percy notes that he is on a high level during the dream. While playing, he curses the ghost Blinky, showing that he's a fan of the game if he knows the names of the ghosts. He helps Percy, telling him that the gods needed the heroes, just as the heroes needed the gods. Percy later uses this to realize that everyone needed to fight together to defeat Kronos, as the Titan was trying to split them all up.
