Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're playing soccer as a forward and you touch the ball with your hands. Someone yells at you "that's not how you do it!". As a matter of fact, he's right. Who is the only player in the field that is allowed to touch the ball with their hands in a soccer match?

Answer: The goalkeeper

FIFA's law #12 establishes that touching the ball with the hands is strictly prohibited unless you are the goalkeeper and you're inside the penalty box (the big rectangle covering the outside of the net).

One of the best known hand incidents in soccer happened in the 1986 World Cup, when Diego Maradona, from Argentina, scored a goal with his hand, making everyone think it was scored with the head. Argentina won the cup as a result.
2. You're playing baseball and you hit the ball very hard. It bounces on the ground and then goes over the fence. You've made a home-run! Or at least that's what you think, because the umpire stops you when you step on second base. Why has he done this?

Answer: It is a ground rule double

Yes, if the ball does not touch the ground and goes out of the park, it's a home run. But when it first bounces on the field and then goes out of the park, it is called a ground rule double and two bases are awarded.

Before 1930, when this rule was introduced, if the ball bounced on the field before leaving the park it was still considered a home run.
3. You're playing volleyball and the other team hits the ball seven times before passing it over the net. One of your teammates yells "that's not how you do it!". According to international rules, what is the maximum number of contacts with the ball allowed before it must go over the net?

Answer: 3

In volleyball, a team can touch the ball no more than three times before passing it to the other side. Making contact with it seven times would cost the team a point.

The origins of volleyball go back to 1895, when a YMCA physical education director called William G. Morgan started a similar game to how we play today.
4. You're playing basketball and you notice your friend walking with the ball without dribbling or bouncing it. You approach him and tell him "that's not how you do it!". What is this violation of the rules called?

Answer: Travel

Basketball rules require that you dribble the ball at least once while in movement.

In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American doctor from the YMCA invented basketball in an attempt to keep his students active even though it was rainy. Today it is one of the most popular sports in the world.
5. You're watching a professional American football game on TV with your friend. He says that, according to the rules, each quarter lasts 10 minutes. Is he right?

Answer: No

A regular football match consists of 4 quarters, of 15 minutes each, which means there are two halves of 30 minutes.

American football actually evolved from rugby, not the opposite way.
6. You're playing golf with a friend. He says he can put the ball in the hole with only one shot. What is this called in golf?

Answer: Hole in one

A hole in one happens when a player gets the ball into the cup with a single stroke. Holes in one are also called aces.

The origins of golf are kind of unknown, but it is thought that it has existed as a sport since the 15th century. The oldest known golf tournament was played in 1860.
7. You're playing tennis and you wait for the ball to bounce two times before hitting it with your racquet. Your opponent tells you "that's not how you do it!" Is he right?

Answer: Yes

Standard tennis rules say the ball can only bounce once or it will be a lost point. You can also hit the ball without it bouncing at all.

It is believed that tennis started in France, with King Louis X.
8. You're out bowling. You make your first throw of the game and you knock down all of the pins. A friend behind you screams "you made a spare!" You know he's not right, so you approach him and tell him the correct term. What is it?

Answer: Strike

A spare happens when you knock all the pins down in your second attempt. As this was your first throw of the entire game, it is impossible it would have been a spare; instead it is called a strike.

A turkey means 3 consecutive strikes, and a split is when you have one pin, each at a different side. Those are very tricky!
9. You're playing cricket and both teams have 6 players. A professional cricket player, who was casually there, says "That's not how you do it!" How many players must each team have according to the rules of cricket?

Answer: 11

No more than eleven players, including a team captain, are allowed in cricket. Eleven is also the number of players each team needs in a soccer match.

In baseball though, the correct number of players would be 9.
10. You're playing ice hockey and a friend of yours sees someone is injured, so he yells "stop the ball!" The other players and you look at each other, confused. What is the correct term for it?

Answer: Puck

Ice hockey is played with a puck, which is a disk made of rubber. Your friend was not entirely wrong however, as field hockey is played with a ball.

Ice hockey is very popular in countries like Canada and the United States.
