Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A dog is the best friend of man. But a top dog... not necessarily. Idiomatically, what is a top dog?

Answer: The most important person of an organization

A "top dog" is usually the boss or highest authority in a company, or the best at something. It is the antonym of "underdog", which means a person who is expected to lose.

"Top Dog" was also the name of a 1995 movie starring Chuck Norris, as well as the name of a rapper.
2. Cats are part of the feline family, but not all cats have a home. What is another way to refer to a stray cat?

Answer: Alley cat

"Alley Cat Allies" is an organization devoted to the protection of cats who are on the street and have no home. The organization has been protecting "alley cats" since 1990.

There was also a 1983 video game published for Atari called "Alley Cat".
3. I'm sure Carlos Slim's companies make a lot of money, or else Slim wouldn't have been ranked as the richest man in the World in 2013, would he? So we might classify one of his companies, America Movil, as which of these?

Answer: Cash cow

A cash cow is a business that produces very high amounts of money and is very productive. Slim's America Movil owns Telmex, the formerly government-owned telephone company and Telcel, the leading cellphone company in Mexico.
4. Abraham Lincoln was one of the most famous Presidents of the United States, but he wasn't known at all before his election. Which of these would best describe him in this situation?

Answer: Dark horse

In politics, the expression "dark horse" refers to a politician who is not very well known. Lincoln was barely known until his election in 1861, and then he became even more famous when he was murdered by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.

The expression may also be used in sports.
5. How do you call a small "bank" where you save money at home?

Answer: Piggy bank

Here's the story of the etymology of "piggy bank": it turns out "pig" can also mean a type of earthenware (ceramic material). People used to save their money in jars made of pig, so the name stayed! Of course then, as time went by, the piggy bank went on to have the shape of an actual pig!
6. Joe Dever published a series of 28 gamebooks with this name. It can also mean someone who has few friends and doesn't like to spend much time with them. Which idiom is this?

Answer: Lone wolf

A lone wolf usually spends his/her time by himself. Dever published the first of his 28 books in 1984. There is also a little town in Oklahoma with the name of Lone Wolf.
7. If I told you I was in a "rat race", I obviously wouldn't be in a running competition against rats, would I? Instead, what would I mean to tell you?

Answer: I'm in an endless, rushed pursuit

Usually, being in a "rat race" is having a rushed, confused and pointless lifestyle. The expression comes from rats, who seem to run around pointlessly, without achieving anything at all.

The 2001 movie "Race Rats" starred Rowan Atkinson, famous for his role of Mr. Bean, and Whoopi Goldberg.
8. An eager beaver is a person who works really hard to achieve something, just like beavers! Which of the following words would be a synonym of "eager beaver"?

Answer: Enthusiastic

The expression is used to describe a person who is very excited about doing something. There is a trailer company called "Eager Beaver Trailers", which helped in the rescue of the 33 trapped miners in Chile, in 2010.
9. If your teacher yelled at you to "stop the monkey business", what did she really want to say?

Answer: Stop misbehaving!

"Monkey business" is an idiom used to describe illegal or unethical activity. So if someone ever tells you to "stop the monkey business", you should straighten yourself up!

The Black Eyed Peas released their third album, "Monkey Business", in 2005.
10. I didn't want to leave the title of the quiz out of the quiz, so here it is! Is describing someone who is very mad at you as a "sad panda" correct in terms of language?

Answer: No

It would not be correct, because feeling as a "sad panda" is feeling very depressed and desolated, however not angry. Sure, you can be angry and sad at the same time, but a sad panda is one who is feeling down.

If you're angry, then we would say you had a cow.
