Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is eating octopus the same thing as eating squid?

Answer: No

This matter often causes confusion when discussing these two different animals. Even though both are cephalopods and both have blue blood, an octopus is not the same as a squid. One of the big differences between them is lifespan: while an octopus can live from one to three years, a squid can live from nine months up to five years! There generally aren't many differences when it comes to cooking methods, though squid meat is a little bit more tough compared to octopus meat.
2. What is the first thing you should do when cooking with octopus?

Answer: Clean the octopus

Well, I guess most of you got this one right because this is basic when cooking seafood, or any kind of food. You should wash the octopus by removing the entrails and stomach, and finally rinse it to remove any other remains.
3. Octopus is not quite soft, so we must soften it before eating it. Which of these would be the best way to tenderize the octopus?

Answer: Let the octopus simmer in a pot or pan

You should let the octopus simmer at low heat for one and a half hours. Another good option to tenderize it would be roasting it in an oven for two hours.
4. Some octopus are venomous.

Answer: True

The octopus considered to be more dangerous is the blue-ringed octopus, although a study made in 2009 showed that all octopuses, cuttlefish and even some squid were venomous. You should be very careful when eating octopus, and other kinds of seafood as well.
5. There are many cultures in the world that use octopus in their cuisine. Which culture could we relate the pickled octopus with?

Answer: All of these

Pickled octopus can be used either as Spanish tapas, Italian antipasto, or Greek meze, which are all sort of appetizers.
6. Which Japanese dish made with octopus shares its pronunciation with a Mexican traditional dish?

Answer: Tako

Tako is a Japanese dish, in which the octopus is sliced and eaten...alive! People have even died from eating this food. It is so popular in Japan, that it is sometimes used as pizza topping. The Mexican food I'm thinking of is tacos, which have really nothing to do with seafood, and certainly not with live octopus.
7. Octopus is usually fried with flour and eggs. Which other food, also from the family of cephalopods, makes a tasty snack when fried?

Answer: Calamari

Calamari are yummy with tartar sauce! It is deep-fried squid, usually served at Italian restaurants.
8. Octopus can be grilled, baked, broiled or sautéed.

Answer: True

Octopus can be cooked with any of these methods and taste great with either. It can also be served as ceviche, a kind of cocktail.
9. Which cuisine gives us "sannakji", an octopus based dish?

Answer: Korean

Sannakji, a dish that has received the "honor" of being voted as one of the grossest foods in the world, consists of live baby octopus seasoned with sesame seeds. Does it sound tasty to you?
10. What is a popular octopus dish that is traditional in Veracruz, Mexico?

Answer: Octopus in its own ink

Octopus in its ink is also eaten in Acapulco and in many other places worldwide. I have never tasted it, but if it's so popular, it can't be that bad!
