Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finally, after a relaxing vacation, the hens are coming home to roost. They cannot wait to see all their friends again. Like Peter the Pig for example, who is pink, fat and nice. The hens are trying to remember Peter's ability. What is it?

Answer: He has an excellent sense of smell

Pigs have an excellent sense of smell. They are very intelligent animals and are farmed by humans to make bacon and ham, among other edibles.

Peter, although not very fast at running, can smell things from very long distances which helps to compensate for his relatively poor sight.
2. As they kept walking, the hens remembered Clarice the Cow, and how she was milked every day. Do all cows need to be milked?

Answer: No

Actually, cows don't need to be milked at all. It turns out that cows are supposed to feed that milk to their calves, but these are taken away from them in order to keep producing milk: It's pretty sad if you view it from an animal rights perspective. A cow that has never given birth to a calf will not produce any milk at all.
3. The hens suddenly remembered their old friend, Sam the Sheep, who also produced milk. What makes sheep milk different from cow milk?

Answer: Sheep milk contains higher levels of calcium

Sheep milk is rich in vitamins and calcium, more than cow's milk, and it is great to make cheeses such as feta, Roquefort, and manchego.
4. Harry the Horse was another friend of the hens. He used to play with them all day long. One of the hens was confused, so they stopped. Then she asked: "Was Harry a herbivore?". How did the other hen answer?

Answer: Yes

As a matter of fact, horses are herbivores (they only eat plants), which makes all horses grazers. Horses were domesticated by some of the first human civilizations and they remain important today.
5. Don the Donkey sometimes talked about his ancestors, who lived in the desert, and survived thanks to their amazing digestive system. What is one special thing a donkey's digestive system can do?

Answer: Extract moisture from food

Contrary to popular belief, donkeys are very intelligent animals, and don't like to be alone. Their digestive system not only can extract moisture from food more efficiently, but can also break down inedible plants that donkeys sometimes eat.
6. The hens had reached the first half of their trip and they saw a duck passing by, which reminded them of their friend Danny the Duck. They looked back to the times when they would all try to swim, but even though the hens did get wet, Danny left the river with his underlayer of feathers completely dry! During which process do ducks spread a waxy coating that protects the feathers?

Answer: Preening

Ducks and other birds clean their feathers in a process called "preening". They secrete a waxy oil from the uropygial gland (or preen gland). This is used to coat their feathers, which makes them highly waterproof.
7. "We're almost there!" said the enthusiastic hen. As they walked, a rabbit jumped quickly in front of them, with a carrot in his mouth. "Remember when Raymond the Rabbit used to endlessly eat carrots, but he would feel sick afterwards?". "Yeah, I do. I wonder why that was..." Why can't rabbits eat too many carrots?

Answer: They contain high amounts of sugar

Carrots have a lot of sugar, which eventually will harm a rabbit, just as too much sugar harms human beings. It is best to feed a rabbit with grass and hay, which is what they have evolved to eat.
8. Oliver the Owl had an amazing eyesight. He could see things from a very long distance. Which other sense is very developed in owls?

Answer: Hearing

People usually associate owls with wisdom and with very good eyesight, however, owls have an incredible hearing as well! They can attack a prey without even seeing it, as the owl can hear every move.
9. After a long trek, the hens were just about to get there. Before crossing the road, they greeted Paul the Peacock, who was just eating dinner. What would Paul most likely be eating in the wild?

Answer: Insects

Peacocks are omnivorous ground-feeders, which means that they eat insects, plants, and small creatures. Omnivores eat both plants and animals.

The peacock is the logo of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and it was first introduced in 1956 by John J. Graham.
10. The adventure is over! The hens are home, just in time to roost! Haley and Hanna were just about to start greeting everyone when suddenly, Robert the Rooster, Hanna's husband, exclaimed: "Look out, a raccoon!" As they ran into the farm, they began looking around for other animals who would want to hurt them. Which of these animals feeds on roosters and hens and might want to hurt Haley, Hanna, and Robert?

Answer: A hawk

Animals such as hawks, raccoons, snakes, foxes and skunks prey on chickens. Chickens eat worms, seeds and grains, and occasionally fruits and vegetables.

Luckily, Haley, Hanna and Robert got inside the farm before the raccoon got them, and they got to tell their friends the amazing story of their trip.
